Unreasonable Fine

Options
Hi,

Two weeks ago my dog got out my back gate.

She was found by a neighbour a few doors down who took her to the depot where she was scanned and the address was given to my neighbour who brought her back and dropped her off.

I have now received a bill for £52.00 for collection/drop off of my dog and for out of hours service, (it was a sunday).

Now I know the dog warden does a great job and if he had indeed driven out to collect my dog and then delivered her back to me on a sunday afternoon then I would be happy to pay.

However all he did was scan the dog and give the address to my neighbour, a procedure that took all of 5 mins and he was in the office anyway.

Do you think this fine is reasonable or should I appeal for a reduced charge. I was thinking £10?

Unfortunatly she wasn't wearing her collar

Seems expensive but maybe its meant to be a lesson to ensure that in future you look after your dog better?

It's reasonable. There are significant overheads to the service; he may have been in the office anyway, but you're paying for the fact he was.

£52 to get your dog back sounds like a bargain really.
  • Sounds reasonable to me - that amount covers far more than scanning and giving out an address.

Why wasn't she wearing her collar when allowed outside? Lesson learned I suggest?

£52 will make you think in future...a tenner will not.

Around here it is £90 if they get to the kennels, so sounds cheap (and perhaps reduced anyway).

Crikey-lucky the little dog was injured or killed, or caused an accident.
Would you say your garden was insecure then?
Some dogs do like to make a run for it.
I'm surprised he let the neighbour have the dog-you could have had a bigger bill.

When some kids took my dog out the back garden and couldn't remember where we lived I was charged £120 to get her back.

The kennels said that the charge reflects the fact that many are never collected and therefore the money is to cover the overall costs. You will normally find the amounts are set out by the council and can be found on their website.

AIUI a "fine" which is backed by legislation as opposed to a "penalty charge" (for breaching a contract eg bank charges) doesn't have to reflect the costs involved in sorting out the problem
  • Dear oh dear.

OP...do you have a death wish???

Coming on a forum and saying [in essence] 'my dog isn't worth £52' is asking to be flamed, and flamed big-time!!!
