I always have the same problem with computer not recognised when trying to access my savings account and end up with the txt message. This happens on my laptop with win 8 and my desktop with XP.
  • I still stand by the thread title as as far as I am concerned it is now impossible for me to access my credit card account without making adjustments to my system to accomodate Tesco's over zealous security system.

How is it I can easily access my bank account with just a 4 figure pin number and password yet to actually view/pay my credit card bill I have to allow cookies to be left on my system and have to remain with the one computer without going through the same procedure over and over.

Thanks to everyone for their replies and opinions but I think I share oldagetravellers and Patrick1's views and I suspect many others will as well. Tesco's take note!
  • I have 2 computers and I can only use 1 of them to log into my wife's Tesco credit card online.

I don't see it as a threat to my security to allow them to use cookies or whatever they use.

I prefer it that way. No one can log into Tesco from, say an internet caf! .
Some people go a bit over the top about computer security.

Just remember never click a link from an email, no matter where it comes from.
Getting forgetful, if you think I've asked this before I probably have. :rotfl:
  • I have just come across this same problem. I'm not sure why I haven't before. I couldn't access my Credit Card account because it didn't recognise my computer. I also refuse to give them my mobile phone number for various reasons and don't think you should be forced to do so as a condition of accessing your card details online. Also, I might not have a mobile phone. In addition, I have two desktops, two laptops and a tablet, all of which I might need to use to access my account and that's not including the computers at work etc. I called up Tescobank to find out how I caould access my account online and got told that it would take 3-4 days by post to get a code but that code would only work on one computer! However, if all I need to do is find out my account balance, the Customer Service people can give that to me over the phone. So what's the point of having an Online facility, I ask? It makes a total mockery of the Tescobank statement as you try and login that says "Our aim is to make Online Banking easy to access for all our customers." Whoever devised this latest strategy for their online banking needs their head examined. It's plain daft. Rant over.

If you refuse to give your mobile phone number to banks to increase your banking safety then that's your choice, but then you'll have the problem you've come across. I suggest you don't open an account with Santander either, which require the use of a mobile phone number for various account functionality, such as creating new payees, changing security details, turning off paper statements, etc.

Likewise, you won't get useful text messages from them about recent transactions and will have to wait for your monthly paper bill.

It's all very well having a rant but they make it quite clear that you can use online banking without a mobile but that this is a slower and less flexible process, see: http://faq.tescobank.com/help/change-centre/no_mobile

As with any other bank and account, it's their rules, you know what to do if you don't like them!

The reason you are finding it difficult is that the account is not in your name, but the name of your wife.

Credit card accounts are not 'joint accounts'. You are just a secondary card holder.

It is right that it should be impossible for a person who is not the account holder to view the account.

Try setting up a new DD or standing order or payment online nowadays with Halifax, BoS, TSB etc without a phone for them to call and verify it is you.
They call and ask you to input the number that appears on your computer screen.

I got a payg sim and a cheap mobile and give that number out.

I only use it for that.

Banks and CC companies ARE turning the clock back, without a doubt. Increasingly online banking is becoming more and more difficult, with over-the-top security being introduced all over the place (to protect them, not you, BTW). The answer is simple; revert to paper-based banking via good old Royal Mail. This is what I have with Tesco CC - no online account and paper statements once a month. I pay by FasterPayment. I have 10 credit cards at the moment and slowly but surely they are reverting to paper-based. When First Direct gest around to attempting to force SecureKey on me for my current account I'll be reverting to telephone banking for the elements which they will no longer allow without a SecureKey - and I'll be insisting all communications are carried out by post.
