Tesco Credit Card online management now impossible

For years I've received notification that my credit card statement is ready to view/manage online but the last few months I've tried to log on and gain access to the Tesco site in order to pay the outstanding balance in full I have been denied. Message comes up that it doesn't recognise my computer. I believe this is because Tesco's implant certain cookies on your computer so their system recognises you when you try to gain access. Problem is my antivirus software removes all such cookies, harmful or not. I don't see why I should have to leave my computer open to threat to satisfy their security systems.

They say you can gain temporary access via a mobile phone message that gives a security number that in turn gives 10 minute access. This procedure produces a message that I should then phone their customer services for help. Getting in touch and getting interogated is then the order of the day with them insisting that they only deal with my wife who first registered the account many years ago despite my name appearing on my card!

After spending a lot of time and effort for two months on the run I have for the second time requested paper statements so that I can view my transactions and pay by popping into my local bank. Thanks Tesco's for turning the clock back 10 years for me, pity you won't do the same with your food prices.

Anybody else experienced this? Think I'll soon be ditching our Tesco Credit cards in favour of another cashback card before the festive season arrives.

  • I have experienced something similar when trying to log on to my account using my ipad instead of the PC. However I think I had the option of being remembered on the ipad too.

I have never paid my bill via the Tesco's website as I always pay from my current account by setting up a faster payment rather than using a debit card. I can set up the payment when I receive notification that my bill is ready and specify when I want the bill paid. It saves me going to a bank and relying on the site working the day I need to pay.

Cookies are not 'threats', regardless of how you look at them. They are simply data that a certain site stores on your PC, and only that site can read them back. There's no need to delete them, but if you worry that every site is going to attack you using cookies, you can specify an exclusion for Tesco, then you only need a temporary access code once, and from then on your computer will be recognised.

If you haven't already, it may be worth using their troubleshooter at http://www.tescobank.com/change/online-banking-troubleshooting.html

Cookie settings are normally associated with browser configuration rather than antivirus software, but the troubleshooter provides a number of different things to check, including both browser cookie settings and AV configuration, it may just be that you need to set the Tesco site as trusted:
Check if your security software is blocking Tesco Bank Online Banking:

If you installed security software (such as Norton or McAfee), it may be set up to block us from confirming if you're using a computer that you've asked us to recognise.
You'll normally find the settings under Privacy in your security software, and you should check that the software isn't blocking our site. If you have the option to add trusted sites to your security software, you should add either tescobank.com or, for software that needs only the log in address, add login.myproducts.tescobank.com.
If you need more help, please refer to the instructions provided by your security software to find out how to check your settings.

Their security is a bit of a nightmare. I usually get the temp password sent to my mob because I use public comps. I think ths most annoying thing is their 0845 number to call. Costs a fortune. I do use say no to 0870 website but from what I remember theres no one verified.

    The thread title is wrong.

I just logged on without a problem and checked my account. But then I hadn't disabled cookies.

    "The thread title is wrong."

No, it isn't Roger. They've changed the way a customer logs in. I went through the "new" procedure at the weekend setting up a different pin, password etc.. Even choosing a picture from their selection which I'd recognise.
I logged in using a computer elsewhere, not my own, so now I try to log in with my p.c. or laptop it's not recognised because their cookie or whatever is on the other laptop.
They now require a mobile 'phone number to send a one time access code to use on an unrecognised computer!
I've just written my account closure letter because there is no way they're getting hold of a mobile 'phone number. Tough luck for anyone without a mobile 'phone, and I'm sure many of their customers don't have one or unwilling to share their number.
I wish to keep my mobile number private. My landline number is well into the public domain so why can't they also use a system similar to Lloyds when setting up a new payee from your account?
I'm now unable to access my CC account to "manage" it.

At the risk of getting bogged down in semantics, the thread title clearly is wrong because it's not impossible to manage a Tesco CC online!

It may be harder than it was before and it may have some new prerequisites, such as software settings and/or use of a mobile phone - if some people choose to see these as showstoppers then it's entirely their prerogative to take their business elsewhere but it's an exaggeration to say it's impossible....

I had the same problem with Tesco's website. My Firefox browser is set to purge cookies when I close it down. This is because I don't like advertising companies (Google included) tracking my age, sex, marital status, education, sexuality, purchasing habits, income, address and so on.

I closed my Tesco credit card and have since opened an MBNA card, purely because of Tesco's tedious SMS verification issue. MBNA only require a username and password - which is fine with me because it can only be used to view the cc bill.

In response to Hominu - most websites force your browser to set cookies from third party tracking/advertising websites. These tracking sites build up incredibly detailed profiles about you which they then use to tailor advertisements to you.

I prefer to remain someone they don't know much about and in return receive just generic advertisements.

If you have firefox then I'd recommend installing the free Ghostery addon - this tells you the tracking companies used by each of the websites that you visit.
