Melissa and Doug make some lovely traditional toys.

My son turns 3 in January and we have got him a v-tec digital camera as he loves playing with the camera on my phone.

How about a fairly simple, solid dolls' house? Like this ...

My friend's daughter has birthday very soon after christmas too and was 3 last year. When people asked my friend what to get her she said they would ideally like money to put towards a climbing frame once the weather got better.
I also second the balance bike & micro scooter. Our balance bike was half price in Halfords for £50 - not cheap but it was worth every penny for the amount of use it gets. Worth paying more for a lighter frame especially when I end up carrying it!!0 -
We're done! Found Mothercare/ELC online very helpful.
Got some Gruffalo snap cards, a couple of puzzles, some play money (don't worry I'll be making sure she is very MSE with it!) and a game which is kind of like Ker Plunk (was going to buy the original but apparently it now very shoddily made compared to the one we had as kids). Her other bits are winter clothes that she needs.
And I've a good few ideas bookmarked for birthday too and haven't had to move from my sofa. Why would you do battle with the crowds out there? We Made-it-3 on 28/01/11 with birth of our gorgeous DD.0 -
My littlest turns 3 in February so we've stashed some Xmas bargains aside too
My older 2 never really played with toys much and were much more into creating their own games so it all depends on what your little cherub likes. A mix of suggestions:
Dressing up clothes, my girls loved these
Play kitchen, girls and boys have all loved these
Wooden chopping food
Puzzles
Scooter
Grow with me basketball set
Crafty bits and bobs
Building blocks
Train set
Another fan of balance bikes!

Books. Both my children love books.
Lego,
A train set. My two had a big wooden one that you can add to. I know not a typical girlie toy but my daughter is a total tom boy & doesn't / didn't go for dolls etc
Jigsaws. I liked the ELC ones but join their birthday club as they send 20% off vouchers before birthday.
Building bricks
However I do think your idea of putting some money aside to take her somewhere is a good one.
Do you have a zoo or something similar that you could get annual membership to ?
