Mutton

I have in my freezer a large piece of mutton that I would like to roast at the weekend, however no idea on timings would it be the same as lamb. I know mutton is quite fatty so long and slow roast:confused::confused::confused: also it might fit in the slow cooker so would that be ok. although I don't know if it will fit in there. Can it be served pinkish like lamb or does it have to be well cooked. Any advise gratfully received .

I have never roasted mutton, always slow cook it as a curry.

How asout pot roasting it like you would a cheaper piece of beef, I've tried it with a fatty piece of lamb (one of the bits you never really know what to do with if you buy a half lamb for the freezer) and it was yummy, plus it was a lot easier to strip the remaining meat off what was left to make a chunky shepherd pie

I have cooked it slowly in the SC before and just served with normal lamb accompaniants (sp)...mint sauce/jelly, boiled spuds or new pots etc

Mutton is absolutely fabulous, don't be afraid of it. It has a wonderful flavour, and shouldn't be tough. The difference to lamb is a bit like the difference between, say, beef and veal.

I first had mutton as mince. I was absolutely horrified when I saw it, as it was so fatty. Howver, I had planned on having shep pie, and shep pie we were going to have. I went ahead and cooked it as if it were lamb, and it was fan-bluddy-tastic. So much flavour! So moist!

We never have lamb mince now, always mutton.

So my recommendation is just do what you would normally do for lamb or beef.

Sorry, nothing to add, but can you let on where you bought your mutton? I love it but haven't been able to but it for years - my butcher and the farm shop tell me * there's no demand * even when I'm stood there demanding it ;)

Thanks for all the replies, I got my mutton from my lovely little butchers just after xmas it was a 6lb joint which cost me 8.00. Unfortunately my butcher has just closed down due to a lack of demand for butcher shops and competetion from the supermarket and his lease costs were increasing. He was really good and his meat was the best I have ever had and cheaper than the tasteless supermarket meats. My freezer is full of meat as I stocked up very well before he closed. Hopefully I will have enough meat to last into august. Anyway in the end I decided to slow cook 3/4 of the mutton which i did for about 10 hours on low setting and it tasted fantastic looks like beef when cooked but tasted better than lamb. We had it as a roast dinner both yesterday and today. With the other 1/4 I have diced it and will make a korma in the slow cooker for tommorrow. So in total we will have served 15 portions from it. A meat definately I would have again if I can source it. Even the kids thought it was lovely. Mind you they are not fussy as we have a eat what you are given or go hungery policy with them which has been very succesful!!!

I'm always told theres no demand and people don't know how to cook it. Which makes me chuckle as within a 5 minute drive there are 5 asian/halal shops which is where I buy my mutton as much or little as I require.

Can someone help me. I've just had a thought about Mutton. I know its supposed to be tough but should be good for the SC in that case?

Where would I get it from and does it just taste like lamb? Is it cheaper than lamb?

I've been invited out and have seen Mutton Curry on the menu which gave me the thought!

    Catt xx
