The RPM looks plausible (note speed gauge is in kph: 100 kph is 62 mph):

So I was right about it being in 5th gear!
I assumed (incorrectly) it had 6 gears...0 -

Are you sure it isn't a Delorean and you are doing 88mph?
Looks like someone's been watching Wheeler Dealer today!

I think I have the same engine as you, BCB 1.6 but on a golf.
Diesels have their place, I drive the diesel golfs on zipcar sometimes and they are very torquey and nice to drive but if you're doing less than 10K miles a year diesels would not be a wise choice.
Pointless talking about economy when you don't drive much.0 -

Driving my newly purchased 00-plate 1.6 petrol VW Bora at 70MPH, getting 3400rpm and at 80MPH getting 4000rpm.
Why are you driving at 80MPH? 70MPH is the speed limit on UK motorways and dual-carriageways.0 -
I think I would be tempted do give it a bit of a blast and blow any cobwebs away.0

Are you sure you don't have a faulty tacho? I can't think of any modern car that is so low geared and 20mph/1000revs is pretty extreme.0

It's not unheard of. I know of a Toyota 1.5 engine that's the same. Geared for acceleration rather than top end, so it's also 4000rpm at 80mph in top gear (5th).
And by all accounts the 1.8 Celica you were going to buy is about 3750revs at 80mph, even with 6 gears.0 -

I don't think I have ever watched Wheeler Dealer. I might have to start though.0 -

An indicated 80 mph is likely to be around 74-76 ish true, and the police really aren't going to bother you at that speed, in my experience.I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0 -
