Thank u for your support , i have got to arrange the gas people to come in and see if its a live supply , im just concerned how much it will cost to rum on storage heaters and its a nice house and i dont want t end up not being able to pay the bills.... hubby works full time but low paid and we get the normal tax credits but nothing else.. hopefully we will get something sorted.:D
Yes we are much in the same boat as posted above it is awful having to rely on someone else for your housing and whilst I am eternally grateful that we have our own roof over our head it would be great to own our own house and vacate this one then we could do/ have whatever we wanted but I am the highest earner on about 12k a year and hubby had to give up full time work because of childcare issues he does a bit of self employed work here and there we also get TC's we could never raise a mortgage to buy with prices being what they are now.
Good luck with it all anyway

Dont know if theres anyone out there that can advise but here goes..
we been offered a larger house which we really like the only problem we got with it it has no gas at present...
i have asked the h/a about getting gas and they are saying no as they are going to replace the old storage heating with new storage heating.
while we were there looking at it yesterday we found a capped gas point so its got a gas main:) we told them this and they said they are upgrading people to storage heating so now confused... and to have a meter fitted it would be 6 mths...
well i have just phoned british gas and found i could arrange a live dead check today and if its live i can get a meter fitted in 8 working days if its dead then 10 weeks ...
i said ill comprermise if they not doing central heating weather they can get gas to the kitchin as i really dont want to sell my big range cooker that i spent years saving for
any advise much appricated it might be a case that i got speak to my mp again
If you like the place, why can't YOU pay to get the gas brought in to your kitchen? After you have done that, then there will be a meter & a gas supply & you can go back to the council & ask again if they would consider GCH.
Do bear in mind that you are very lucky, most people would give their eye teeth to get offered a bigger council house & its well worth your while putting your hand in your own pocket to tweak it to your own requirements.
If you turn it down, I'm sure someone else will be MORE than happy to accept it.0 -

Hi, no one said we wont pay anything yet, up untill today we have not known the full picture. I have spent 4 hrs at the house waiting for national grid to come out and finally found out the gas suppy never been conected so its dead..
Also i have found out i can get gas to the house which is call and yes its gonna cost £250 which im willing to pay.. as it would be easier and cheaper than buying a new cooker.
So tommorow im gonna speak to the H/A with the offer we pay for the gas and they sort out internally as it got to be done by a corgi regeistered person , and being they have their own contracters and the gas in the house is the landlords responsabilty i see what it gets us..
I did also approach warm front to see if there was any help but no as its a H/A house.
If it comes to it and they are not willing we we go with the storage heating and buy a new cooker but at least i have tried to sort it..
the really funny thing is it is one of 2 houses in the street of 130 that has no gas all the otheres have been done.
Fingers crossed for tommorow..0 -
Good luck for tommorow let us all know how you get on.:j:love: Getting married to the man of my dreams 5th November 2011

An electric cooker is going to cost you at least £500 (you can easily spend a lot more, mine was double). You already have the gas cooker you love.
Have you actually found out how much it would cost to get gas in via a meter & then 1 pipe to the kitchen?0 -

But you could easily spend a lot less and save even more money by buying second hand.0 -

Ah yes, BUT is this site about findest the cheapest possible price or finding the item they want or what suits them & then getting that for the best possible price:D
My take on it is the latter:D
Anyway I think she already has an all singing all dancing range cooker, shes not going to want to swap that in for a £200 cooker is she?
Anyway, I'm just suggesting she gets a price, to compare.
Personally I wouldn't entertain a gas cooker :-)0 -
The words cut, coat and cloth spring to mind.
Sell your gas cooker (it's only a cooker after all), buy a cheap electric one and enjoy your new house.(AKA HRH_MUngo)
