But if virtually everyone know their only worth £4-£5, who regards that as a "present", you would need to buy something else anyway.Kids want £40 games, not a cheap tin of sweets.

if my children had the cheek to have this opinion when someone had been kind enough to give them a gift even if it was something only costing £1 i would be furious with them. children should be taught that the love behind the gift is what counts not the gift itself. and there is no way i would expect anyone except myself to pay £40 for a gift for my children (although their grandparents often do) I really hope you dont have children with that attitude and if you do their gifts of a 'cheap tin of sweets' can be sent our way we would very much appreciate them.

all sold out at my store sadly!!! maybe there will be another offer soon!! let's hope so.

I think that a tin of chocs as a family gift is a great idea as long as I get ether first for the purple ones!!! lol! One year for a laugh we removed all of the purple ones and green triangle ones! You should have heard the complaints!!

.............. not all people are as obsessed with how much something costs. ..........

They are, but in the opposite way. There are actually a lot of people (witness some of the posts on this forum) who are very obsessed about cost. They'll literally fight over a 50p saving and traipse around supermarkets in several different towns to 'save' the 50p.

I actually think that, even though these tins are quite cheap, a tin of sweets is actually too much for a single child. Using the 'When I was a lad' analogy, we'd get a packet of sweets not a whole tin.

I think when the poster said the grandmother gives them as gifts it says family gifts so would be for the whole family.

my kids dont expect £40 games or anything else that expensive for presents and are pleased what ever they get, my mum knitted a cardi for a birthday this week and dd was really pleased
and when ds2 saw the tolberone in the heros he actually said someone can buy him a tub for xmas,
children need to understand that not everyone can afford expensive presents and to be grateful for anything they receive

Ahh that Spirit of Christmas .. Just what we all were missing
  • LOL Wendy05! that made me giggle!

I too would be horrified and mortified if my children expected a £40 game and were snooty of something that cost a small amount!! thankfully they don't - mine are both teenagers and would only ask for a £40 game as their main present from us, they would never expect anyone else to spend so much - and both of them always love a tin of chocolates at Christmas and wouldnt give a seconds though to what it had cost!!

In fact my 16 yo DD is considering going to Mr M to get a tin for each of her best friends for Christmas as she said they would love them.

Thank God most of us here and our families and friends understand the value of a thoughtful gift and not how much it costs, personally if somebody gave me at £3.50 tin of Roses or QS Id be extremely happy thank you!
