Been looking around garages for a Astra about 1-2 years old, looked at about 10 cars at different garages and they have all be ex Enterprise cars even ones from main dealers.

So my question is can joe public buy these direct ?

I have searched the interweb and cant seem to find anything

Avis used to sell a lot of their stock off, whether they still do i have no idea, you can only email head office and ask.

Its highly likely Astras are leased for the duration to rental and simply returned to the company currently defleeting Vx's rental and company car fleet, from whence they will nearly all be sold via Network Q, you will never know if they were ex renters or not.

Have you tried Motorpoint and other similar car supermarket type operations.

Enterprise don't retail their ex-fleet cars, they only re-market to dealerships. The only ones that get near to retailing them are Hertz and Avis.

Personally though, I'd pay a little extra and have a pre-reg. Rather than something that's spent it's formative years getting ragged and gaining a drugs marker </cynical plater>
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
Get jobs in offices and wake up for the morning commute?

Look on a manhiem auction site, they can be upwards of a hundred of the same model and same year at some sales.
    Be happy...;)

    Auctions. Manheims or BCA.

These are the places where the majority of ex-lease/hire cars are going to end up.

Wait for someone to come back "dont really want use an auction"
Well two choices, either buy from where the dealers buy, or buy from the dealer .
As said most ex-fleet go straight to the auction centre, often by the hundred at a time, the lease company get one cheque for the job lot and do not have to deal with consumer rights issues, if they sell to the public they can not avoid the SOG act, so they simply do not bother.
Dealers do not have some secret buying source, they turn up at the auctions with all the rest and buy the quantity they want .
The Mark up on ex-lease cars can be huge for dealers.
Private buyers need to be aware of the "buyers auction fees" they can quickly add up, budget for £130 per thousand in fees plus £150 for the pot.
    Be happy...;)

Members of the public can't buy at closed auctions such as when one make sales are held, the days of the mid 2000's when fields of cars stood as the depression hit and were sold off at rock bottom prices just to clear them are long gone.

They don't make the sheer volumes of cars now, not getting caught with their pants down again, can't say i blame them.

Ex renters are OK, but be aware a fair number of Diesel renters are misfuelled (more than in typical motoring), not as its the end of the world when this happens but they only get drained and restarted when it happens, none of this replacing half the injection system which some main dealers sometime insists is necessary when a retail customers messes up.
