Can we change energy suppliers if it says in TA that we need permission ?0

Who pays the bill: you, the landlord or the agent? If it's you, you can change suppliers at any time you like for any supplier you like. All you have to do is ensure you give a final meter-reading when your tenancy ends, tell the supplier where to send the final bill and inform the landlord who the new supplier is.0

Currently on Pre-payment meters (previous tenants had them installed),electric is BG and Gas is nPower so we are looking at 10% increase on both so want to lock in on fixed price0 -
I would never have taken on a rental property with pre-payment meters. I believe the utility companies charge a fortune to remove them.
Have you been in touch with the utility company about the cost of removing the meters, putting you on a normal payment-method and how you could avoid that charge?0 -

Gas and electric doesn't work in the same way as say mobile phone networks. They don't offer you better deals to keep your custom. Go with whoever is cheaper if the bills are in your name.

Maybe not but surely they will still want to keep you as a customer so may be willing to compromise somewhere
Accounts are in my name but it says in TA that we cant change unless we get written permission from LA/LL0 -

The MSE guide suggests that they can only give you what tariffs they offer.Accounts are in my name but it says in TA that we cant change unless we get written permission from LA/LL
Not sure if that is an "unfair term". You would have to get the meters changed back to pre-payment when you moved out, but don't know if the LL can stop you changing meters during your tenancy.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. From the OP's posts I suspect this is a case where they didn't have much choice but to have pre-paid - tenants on HB don't have that many options in the housing market. The property is also damp and lacks decent heating, if I recall correctly. It sucks. It sucks very much. You have my sympathy, OP.0

Thank you Kunekune22,It does suffer damp and we were told when we moved in that it had been resolved but it hasnt, when we moved in we had a boiler that didnt work so not heating and hot water was being done via electric,Damp is now getting worse and spreading (proberly due to winter),New LL seem alot better than old ones so hopefully things are on the up and the situation is looking better in the future0
