thats a bad analogy and ilegal in the uk.
Shill bidding is also illegal in the UK yet you don't appear to appreciate this fact.

1.how would you know? 2. You cant complain youve paid a fair price for the item-which wouldnt bother you cos you would be aware in the first place.
Many ebayers, myself included, find it fairly easy to spot shill bidding.
Even if it wasn't spotted, does this make this illegal activity okay?

You refer to a seller who uses shill bidding as "cheeky"
Would you use this same term for someone who stole from you in a different manner?

You can almost guarantee that when someone states that, it's often a good analogy any that person only thinks it's bad because it goes against their argument.

Let's look at the particular analogy in question.
Of the 2 scenarios mentioned, one is an illegal business practice used with the intention of getting someone to pay more than they normally would, whilst the other is an illegal business practice used with the intention of getting someone to pay more than they normally would.

When I'm selling I love buyers like Goonarmy.

Nothing like an early high bid to start a bidding war!

PS - snipers work - end of.

A nice early bid also gives sellers plenty of time to enlist the help of friends & family to sign up to help the shilling process.
After all, if the early bidder was someone like Goonarmy, they obviously wouldn't have any objection to this.

The analaogy is bad becuase of several reasons. Firstly its a fixed price point retrospectively reduced. Far from an auction.
Secondly its a discount. Again not applicable in auctions.
Thirdly in a shop there is no commitment to buy until the sale is complete again unlike ebay.

There are many many faults with ebay.t n c's that wouldnt stand up in court, fees and also ebagers that are complete muppets and a feedback system that doesnt really work now. But. And its a big but, if its full of shill bids then why use it? And if you can spot a shill bid why pay? And how did a sniper program become a shill bid defense? They aint designed that way.

Your posts are amusing. The real question is would i pay someone i suspected of stealing from me? Point blank no. And the stuff in red: if its not noticed is it ok? Probbably cos there is no knowledge of a crime. Doesnt make it right but again the chance to walk away is always there. And a shill bid if you didnt recognise it is just a counter bid. Ignorence is bliss.
And a lack of appriciation? Any hay for your high horse?

Are you willing or able to post some proof of this fact? (or is really just your opinion?)
I use sniping software on a regular basis and whilst there is no way of knowing the maximum that other bidders were willing to pay, I do know that there is no way that any of the sellers in question were able to shill up the amount that I paid as I usually snipe in the last couple of seconds.

Agree, I think most people who use them regularly do know that they work.

I only put early bids on items I'm not too bothered about winning - 99 times out of 100 I'm outbid.

If it's an item I really want i always use a snipe to increase my chances of winning.
