Why use soft ware? Commit to the maximum your are willing to spend and ebay will bid it as required from the off. Makes me laugh people who tell me they win auctions like this. If i bid ten pounds straight away and someone else bids ten pounds as a snipe ive win, first past the post.

goonarmy this may be OK for low priced items but it is well known for sellers to open a second ebay account and bid against you till they win and then withdraw the bid leaving you to pay the max you were prepared to.
    Sniping stops this.

This doesnt make sense. If its the maxmimum you are willing to pay for an item regardless of price and you win it then its within your budget. If you win it for less than thats a bonus. If you miss out cos it exceeds your max bid then it was too expensive and you have to look elsewhere. If it is bidded up but its still within the amount you are willing to pay then its not a problem. Cheeky of the seller but once you assign a value to an item stick to it. Have seen real auctions where poeple pay over the odds cos of the excitment of "winning" and beating the bidder next to you.

goonarmy, if you snipe bid then you don't get caught up in auction fever
You see something you like, you put your max price into a snipe bid programme & it bids in the last few seconds
Yes, you may find that someone else bids the same as you in the dying seconds & their bid gets in just before yours so you lose it but it does stop all the sellers who up-bid their own items.

Suppose that you went into Curry's to buy a TV that you saw advertised for £500, and after getting to the sales desk you saw that a billboard stated that the TV had been reduced to £450, I assume that you wouldn't expect the TV at the lower price?
After all, you were originally willing to pay £500 and if you paid this amount, it would still have been within your planned budget.

Irrexpective of whether the final ebay selling price was below the maximum that wished to pay, why should you pay any extra if that extra was due to the seller acting illegally?
  • https://www.goofbid.com is the one I've found the easiest to use.

I suspect this is where the "value" lies. A lack of discipline(for want of a better word) can lead to people paying over the odds at an auction. Go to a live one and hear how an auctioner talks, very fast lots of hype-certainly isnt a pro-customer approach.

thats a bad analogy and ilegal in the uk.
    But taking your example:
Theres a tv on ebay priced at 450. You THINK (this is the crucial bit, the value asserted by your self)it has a value of 500. So you bid a max amount of 500. At every point below 500; ie 499.99 an lower you are getting a deal. At 500 you are paying a fair price, in your own veiw irrespective of actual value. Once it passes the 500 mark its too dear. Now i see this auction x amount of days before the auction end, decide im in the narket and 500 is a fair price. I bid 500 and ebay puts a bid of say 460 as the highest bid. Im winning, carry on with me life and forget about it. A.N.Other sees it thinks thats a bit of me and bids 500 quid. Im winning and the price is a fair one of 500 now. If A.N.Other has used a sniping program or just ebay itself its irrelevant cos ive won the item. And ive done nothing more than the basic ebay setup. No third partys or wizardry.
Now the shill bidding arguement is flawed also cos if someones bidding up items then a sniping program used by them would put the item price up anyway and if you have paid a fair price that has been ilegally bidded up 1.how would you know? 2. You cant complain youve paid a fair price for the item-which wouldnt bother you cos you would be aware in the first place.
