sky couldn't give me the TV , need Advice

Hi there : )

Let me tell you my situation with SKY

I moved to a new flat and then went to SKY on 24/sep

I took the package with basic Entertainment plus broadband and phone land

the cost will be 40 pound I think

when the engineer came to my flat to install the satellite dish
he said we can't because there is a big mall blocking the signal , then he said SKY will send a special hieght team to install the dish to the highest point free of charge .
It was too good to be true : (

after two days a woman from SKY called and said if you want us to send the team we need to cancel your contract then you you buy another one from us ! I said fine just give me the TV !

Then I got a call from the special team saing they will send an engineer and I must pay 25 pound just to find the best possiblity to install the satellite non refundable ofcourse , and if he find it they will install it if I paid the 100 extra , I said no deal , SKY said they will aford it, Bye

I should have everything ( broadband + TV + phone ) running by 2/oct

right now I made a new contract with just ( phone and broadband ) and it will be working by 11/oct

I think SKY was disrespectful with me , but the other companies like Virgen and BT tried to sell me the whole package and I said just tv but they don't want to plus they will take up to 21/oct and it will be too long :(

.............

the bottom line I need a cheap TV service without a satellite

where can I get one ?

I've heared about freeview and youview !

which one is better according to my situation !

thank you and sorry for taking too long

I've been in the UK for just two weeks and every company try to get me with their offers , I just want a TV alone ! is that too much to ask !

There are two completely free UK TV platforms, Freeview and Freesat. YouView is not a separate platform, it's just an on-demand service for Freeview, which is integrated into the EPC.
Freesat is a satellite service and requres a minidish and LNB, just the same as Sky, so you'll need to get that done by an independent installer. Then you just need a Freesat compatible digibox or PVR.
Freeview is a similar terrestial service via an aerial-so you'll need an external aerial installing instead. All UK TV's have built in Freeview tuners, if you want PVR facilities as well then get a Freeview PVR.
If you are in a rental property you will need your LL's permission to do either of the above installs, they're often not allowed on communal blocks. Are you sure that there is not already an aerial or dish feed installed?
If you want subscription channels, then your basic options are Sky, Virgin (if you are in acable area), or TalkTalk.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

i7MoDi's written English is as good (if not better) as many on here whose first language is supposedly English.

No, it isn't actually. YouView is not a Freeview HD device. It is a hybrid terrestrial HD PVR (personal video recorder) with the full suite of catch up TV services on it.

And all that i7MoDi needs to get these services is an aerial and a broadband connection of at least 3Mbps. And its a plug and play box too. So no technical knowledge required. :)

It might be an idea to check whether the flats have a communal aerial off which Freeview could run - most TVs sold in the UK now have freeview built in.

Sky and Freesat need that Sky dish, but I can't help with Sky's T&Cs and what one person may have said.
  • From two facts in your post
1 Having to cancel and make new contracts
2 A "Special team" asking for money to survey and install
it sounds as though the "special team" is NOT Sky but a local specialist firm of installers who handle communal installations etc for Sky. Sky will NOT do communal installations and have height restrictions on how high their installers are allowed to go (not above 3 stories etc) so pass these over to local firms for you to negotiate with. How high is the OP's block of flats? The terms for a free/subsidised "standard installation" are clearly set out in their "Terms and conditions" on line.
