Easyjet: Better to not show up than cancel flights

Hi,

I am struggling to comprehend Easyjets policy to charge me £60 to cancel the two flights I can't make, but if I don't show up there is no charge. Why wouldn't they let me cancel for free which gives them the chance to re-sell? Surely it's better to know in advance that'll be a no show.

Am I missing something?

What do you mean by 'no show, no charge'? If you don't show, you've already paid, so they still have that revenue.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I meant no additional charge. My ticket was less than £30, so doing nothing costs me less than letting them know I'm not turning up. It just seems odd - like I'm missing something, maybe it's because my initial ticket price was so low. I guess it makes sense when most tickets were sold for more than £30, but you'd think there'd be an option to cancel with no refund to let them resell the ticket. It seems wrong to just not turn up!

I believe the fee of £30 per person applies to refunds. You get back what you paid for the flight less £30.

But hardly anyone qualifies for a fare refund because you can only cancel in the 24 hours after booking.

What you do qualify for though is a refund of Air Passenger Duty. This is £13 on most easyJet flights.

I would go ahead and cancel. You will not pay any more but should get £13 per ticket back.

Thanks for replying. That's what I don't get - the £30 applies to the cancellation fee.

    From thier FAQ

"We have a non-refundable pricing policy and therefore if you wish to cancel your flight we are unable to offer you a refund. The only exception to this is our 24 hour cancellation policy, which allows you to cancel any booking within 24 hours of the original booking being made by calling our Customer Service Team. A cancellation can only be processed up to two hours prior to the scheduled time of departure of your flight, although you made the booking on the day of the flight. Please note, a cancellation fee is applicable and additional costs, such as credit/debit cards, Speedy Boarding, baggage and sports equipment fees will not be reimbursed."

So to cancel my 2 return flights will cost £60 minus the £13 APD. So I can get my head round why they would price it so it makes it better for you to not turn up than cancel. Seems odd business practice to me.
  • You misunderstand. The cancellation fee only applies within 24 hours of booking. Afterthat the flight is non-refundable apart from tax.

Basically, if you cancel within 24 hours, you get you fare back less £30, if after 24 hours, you'll only get the tax back.
  • I've double checked - the £30 to cancel still applies after 24 hours.

You didn't double check very well ;)

  • Apparently not!

If you cancel a flight in advance then you'll forfeit the chance of a refund if the flight itself ends up being cancelled.

Unlikely I know, but one foggy day or some heavy snowfall and ....

Surely better to claim the APD back after the flights have taken place?
