Petrol in a diesel.....AGAIN

So a year ago my OH put petrol in our diesel car. Today he has decided to do the same again!!:eek:

Luckily we got away with it the first time with a bill of £145. Surely we cant be so lucky this time around.

To say I'm mad would be an understatement

So how much petrol is now in the tank with how much diesel?

If he realised quickly and it's only a couple of litres of petrol in with 60 litres of diesel it's no problem at all .... however ..... on the other hand ..... if he ....

Why don't you just buy a petrol car and avoid this in future? :D

    Hope it's not too costly.

I've only ever done this once. In my defence, it was whilst my partner was having surgery in hospital, so my mind was elsewhere.

Fortunately, I also only put in a couple of litres before I realised my mistake. I then filled right up with diesel and then let the tank get really low before I filled it right up with diesel again.

All you can do is hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

I've invested in one of those little "Think Diesel" talking reminder devices.
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Fuel light was on and he put £30 worth in.

I just want to scream. It's happened at the worst possible time too:(

Why not just buy a new OH, would be cheaper in the long run.

When did he realise the mistake? Was the car driven at all before realising?

£30 of petrol is quite a lot, has the fuel tank now been drained?

He drove 12 miles to work and didn't notice. The first he realised was when he left work at lunch and the car wouldn't start. It has been towed to a garage and they will drain the fuel and inspect.

Sound like your husband doesn't notice very much.

Get a label for beside the tank cap saying 'Diesel Fuel Only'

Any car accessory shop will have them.

Pity you didn't phone one of these misfueling companies.

They come to you and charge between £150 and £200 depending on where you are in the country.

My wife did it in a similar way a couple of years ago, in fuel light out in £20, drive till car conked out.

Has it recovered home where a misfuel bod came and done the business, which included £20 of diesel, car still runs fine and does same mpg as it ever did.

I was on way to Scotland recently, distracted due to family issues, put in £45 when on fuel light, drive 7/8 miles when it started to misbehave, pulled over and called RAC then subsequently a misfuel bod as the RAC had none working! Not impressed.

My car has been fine since, though I been putting injector cleaner through it, some two stroke oil and changed the fuel filter soon after.

From what I have seen the only time there is serious damage is when somebody puts in £10 of petrol then fills it up and carries on driving.

There is a tipping point where contamination by petrol has a detrimental effect.

I do remember a brand new Ambulance had half a tank or so of petrol put in, the person realised and topped of with diesel and hoped nobody would notice.

Result was a broken Mercedes Sprinter a refused warranty claim and a sacking for gross misconduct for covered up the mistake. Not sure if they were reinstated at appeal.

I personally think a drain and refill, new fuel filter and see how it goes is the way to go.
