Was going to say, that as the OP is only using DVD (and that via Scart not HDMI or even component) and SkyHD then there is little need for Full HD (1080p) as no sources they are using will be able to make use of it.
Unless you intend to upgrade to BluRay or use a games console that outputs 1080p then spend your money on getting a better quality TV than a budget one that covers the box in stickers to be able to bump up the price.0 -
InsideInsurance - I disagree. The DVD is SCART, and about 500 odd lines coming in. Ignore.
You're getting 1080 lines, interlaced, from the broadcaster - Sky, Freeview, HDMI cable or internal tuner.
You want to display these lines on 1080 lines of screen. As in, NO SCALING occurs (make sure overscan is switched OFF!).
If you go for a TV that isn't full HD, it'll be 720 lines most likely. That means taking 1080 lines and squishing them down. Reduced quality.
If your point is about P vs I it doesn't really matter, I doubt you'll find a TV on the shelves that can display 1080 I but not P.
And anyway, what if you do buy BluRay - go buy another TV? I just don't think it's worth the saving to go for less than 1080 these days at any decent screen size as above.0 -
I'm also changing from a 21", 4:3 tv to a newer flat screen, mainly because I'm missing things on either side of the picture:(. My understanding is full HD has a HD tuner and HD ready has an equal screen but not a HD tuner. With a HD source, Sky HD etc, the HD ready tv will have an HD picture. Is this not right?.0

You are misinformed.
To have a full HD sticker the set has to be capable of 1080 lines of vertical resolution. HD ready has to have 767 lines.
Either type may or may not have an HD freeview tuner. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
The reality is that (a) panel quality can out-perform resolution, and (b) unless the screen is very large, most people won't see a marked improvement from 720p to 1080i under normal viewing conditions.
The Sky HD box and any decent TV will make a good job of re-scaling to provide an excellent end-result.
I would always go for a quality brand - probably LG or Samsung which are good quality, but tend to be cheaper than the big names.0 -
HD Ready is the only agreed industry standard really, the rest is just marketing.
HD Ready means at least 720 (not 767, penrhyn) lines vertically, and at least 1 HDMI input. That means the set is READY to display HD content, when you plug something into it.
Full HD has come to mean 1080p - 1080 lines vertically, and the p stands for progressive rather than interlaced. HD BROADCAST in the UK is 1080i.
If you want to drop the 'Ready' part it would mean you have to have an HD tuner or a Blu-Ray player or something built in. Loads of TVs have a FreeviewHD tuner these days so that's OK, but plenty of people have been mis-sold TVs with the HD Ready vs. Full HD misinformation.
Norman Castle - you don't mention a budget, or size of TV that you want, but have a look at my recommendations above.
Cornucopia - my point is that a 1080 screen is so easy to get these days, at very little price premium, that I don't see the point in having to scale any more.0 -
O dear, close but no cigar. That gum you like is coming back in style.0
