the clue is in the word " installation" or is that too anti-environment for you?

Well for me 'getting a stove' includes the installation....i'm not going to be keeping it in a corner just sitting there not fitted am i? Or are you being pedantic enough to twist what i'm saying because i didn't say 'stove installation' to try and make yourself look clever?

Again, why would i get one (and subsequently install it) without following building regs?

Quite a bit of venom in the tone of your post. I'm new here and yet all i've found so far are a load of self righteous forumites who love to tell you how to run your life rather than just answering the question (which still nobody has done). I respectfully suggest in future if you're not answering the question posed then don't answer at all :)

I tried to give as much background info as possible so my question wouldn't seem vague and so far everyone's ignored the question and picked through the background info.

    Very true.

I'm doing a similar thing myself although on a smaller scale - just installing a woodburner rather than fixing the gas boiler.

Its more six of one half a dozen another. Some people would like a wood burner, others would prefer gas rather than the perceived hassle of storing wood, emptying ash and having it swept.

If you've got an unique property or live in an alternative area then I think it would probably be a good thing. Price of gas can only go up, price of collecting wood can only stay the same.

Yeh, the advantages for me are I can make my own paper logs, I have a never ending supply of free firewood and it gives the added bonus of not having to give the greedy gas companies more money than needs be.

I also agree on the perceived hassle thing - lots of people say it's not worth it because you have to store stuff, dry stuff, empty things...to me, that's life, it's living, it's how things are supposed to be albeit on a more modern scale. Some people think it's too much hassle because it means they have to get in from the job they hate and instead of plonking down in front of some drivel (think Eastenders or something) they would have to get their own fire going rather than press a button. People love paying over the odds for 'convenience' because they're essentially lazy.
  • Well if you have a never ending supply of free wood then it sounds like a no brainier, I have to gather my wood after windy days. Still I like walking in woods, chopping it and storing it in preparation. Others think I'm crazy, same people think I'm crazy growing veg when you can just buy it.

Its reassuring to me seeing enough firewood to last the winter in the garage, I like knowing the complete cycle and not reliant on a pipe and god knows what.

Personally I find watching a fire infinitely more interesting than easterners and all that.

Whats the secret for never ending firewood?

To live in Scotland and be married to a horticulturalist who gets it free from work!

We also grow our own veg, I don't think you're crazy, it's modern thinking that's crazy.

Burning wood is greener than gas? Complete balderdash.

Completely agree, since my neighbour put in a wood burner we all have to suffer the smell of burning wood and the smoke from his chimney.

100 houses all with gas heating except one and that one stinks the place out.

My wife now won't hang the washing outside because of the smell

And what will the council do?
    nothing.

smoke free zones are now a joke.
Getting forgetful, if you think I've asked this before I probably have. :rotfl:

It totally depends on what stove you have installed and what you burn on it. All the experts agree that wood-burning stoves are the most cost-efficient and eco-friendly way to heat a home.

Not really anything to do with how eco-friendly it is though. It's a personal choice whether someone wants to burn something which isn't pumped into their house by some company or other.

Sounds to me like you have alreaded decided on what you want to do, and because forum members are not choosing the option you wanted them to, you are getting shirty about it. ;)

Don't want people giving you their opinion? Fine, don't ask them for it on a public forum.

Why don't you just do what you want to do?
