Whilst it's true that there is very little chance that one instance of a blocked fire exit will lead to tragedy that is, of course, not the point.

What people such as he fail to understand is that in most such cases, where there is a tragedy, it would have been preceded by at least one person knowing that the fire exit was blocked and doing nothing about it.

It's the same mindset as those who think that the chances of their having an accident (or getting caught) if they drive a short journey drunk, are so low that it's not worth bothering about. Yes, the chances are low, but if they and ten thousand others adopt the same view and drive drunk a couple of times a week, many tragedies will ensue.

It's due to a very common inability to understand statistics and probability - both subjects that it is known that it is virtually impossible for humans to understand intuitively.

Unfortunately, when people such as JR allow their intuitive feelings to take precedence over the accepted way react to a situation such as the one in the OP (of the original thread), they end up making potentially fatal mistakes.

Exactly. Complacency often leads to avoidable fatal accidents.

I didn't think JC was you.

In fact, the only person who has even raised my suspicions is Jack Reacher - and then only over the last couple of days. It's the arguing with half a dozen people at once on one thread that made me wonder. You know how argumentative I can be but I would give it up as a lost cause long before I was fighting a battle on 6 fronts with not a soul agreeing with me!
