I thought it was agreed I have the knowledge I'm just indifferent to things that don't affect me.
Do you think that is where the "sociopath" idea may have come from?
If 'things' includes human suffering or potential human suffering, isn't that actually one of the definitions of a sociopath?0 -
He has several similarities to dear old Goater:
1) Capable of intelligent posts.
2) Seems to be 'here' almost all day long.
3) Almost never lets a post go by without responding.
4) Willing to argue with half a dozen people at once and doesn't seem to care that just about everyone thinks he's wrong on a topic.
5) When he gets going on a thread he has nearly twice as many posts on it as the next most prolific poster (as a result of 4).
But, who really knows?
As well as the many other names that they have used.0 -

The Glen Cinema fire in Paisley in 1929. Fire doors were locked during a Children's matinee. 71 kids died needlessly. It's still remembered today.0

Yes thats absolutely horrific. However I don't think the incident happened because of a locked firedoor. It looks like the problem was the firedoors opened inwards and the press of people meant the doors couldn't open.
I suspect this is one of the reasons fire doors open outwards.
EDIT - I stand corrected it looks like they were padlocked.0 -

And what's the difference between them being padlocked, and a parked car stopping them opening?0 -

I think that JR's thought is that it is so unlikely that the particular problem that the OP saw would ever cause a problem that it's just not worth bothering about.
Whilst it's true that there is very little chance that one instance of a blocked fire exit will lead to tragedy that is, of course, not the point.
What people such as he fail to understand is that in most such cases, where there is a tragedy, it would have been preceded by at least one person knowing that the fire exit was blocked and doing nothing about it.
It's the same mindset as those who think that the chances of their having an accident (or getting caught) if they drive a short journey drunk, are so low that it's not worth bothering about. Yes, the chances are low, but if they and ten thousand others adopt the same view and drive drunk a couple of times a week, many tragedies will ensue.
It's due to a very common inability to understand statistics and probability - both subjects that it is known that it is virtually impossible for humans to understand intuitively.
Unfortunately, when people such as JR allow their intuitive feelings to take precedence over the accepted way react to a situation such as the one in the OP (of the original thread), they end up making potentially fatal mistakes. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
They would be padlocked on the inside perhaps so JR wouldn't have been able to see, assuming the time travel bit, whereas the car outside would have been obvious and JR could happily ignored it as it would be nothing to do with him and the fact that the deaths could have been prevented would not have bothered him at all.
To quote JR when asked what he would feel if someone dies owing to his "minding my own business" attitude:- "I sadly wouldn't care."
But as he was just trolling it is of no consequence.0
