There's some screening phone you can get (saw it on dragons den)... can't tell you much about it, but should be easy to find via google. I think they go through an automated go-between of sorts - you can add numbers to the approved list. Not sure how it would work with a business line but there might be an option.

Even if you run your own business you need some downtime. Is it a landline? Take it off the hook or get a phone that you can put to silent, where it wont ring, I used to have a phone where you could turn the ring volume completely off if you wanted to and if you have an answerphone, if its really important someone can leave a message.0

I give it 3 seconds when answered and if noboby speaks I put the phone down then do 1471 and check who it is ang 9 out 10 times its a sales call. Their computer picks numbers at random and responses to your voice and then it tells the sales team your number is real or live , ussually you can here lots of people talking in the call center, ,, rememberr dont speak ,,, have fun“Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.”

Are you sure that's not an urban myth? I've read thattelephones and exchange systems are designed so that it is impossible to send an acoustic shock (such as some idiot blowing a whistle) over the network.

Paulineb's is a good suggestion. Can you get an answerphone attached? Maybe you can set it up so the phone only rings two to three times and goes straight to answerphone and ask business customers to leave a message and they will be gotten back to.
My parents used to be bothered horribly and we used to have a 'code' where we knew it was family. If I rang them, I'd let it ring for 2-3 seconds, hang up, do that again, and then a third time. The three calls in quick succession would let my dad know it was me and he'd pick up.0 -
Im self employed and made the mistake of posting my mobile number (as a lot of instructors did) on one forum I was registered on.
Cue lots of withheld calls to my number, mostly sales calls. If I get a number that I dont recognise, its not answered.
I have an answerphone built into my landline, I can turn it on and off as I wish. If I want it removed, takes about two hours for it to go off, just need to let the company know, if I have it on, 7 rings and then its onto an answer message.
Its a PITA, but even when my landline is off the hook, people can still leave a message, better than being harassed by anyone.

I think "trucall" is the name of the screening gadget, but as it's a partly business line you may end up screening out lots of calls you'd otherwise want.
Make a note of the times etc and report to your phone company.0 -
I have Truecall and it's great. We got it because we were getting too many PPI calls during the day and they were waking the baby.
It works by getting the person calling you to speak their name, then it lets your phone ring, tells you who they are, and you can accept or reject. It also gives you the option of 'remembering' the number so if they call again the device will automatically accept/reject on your behalf.
However, I don't think it would work so well for a business line where you have lots of new customers calling - a percentage may be put off by having to leave their name before you will speak to them.
Another suggestion - would your phone company be able to trace/block the number for you if you explain that the caller's harassing you? They might be able to even if it's supposedly withheld.Mortgage when started: £330,995
