Diesels wih veggie oil equals cheap motoring. Whats not to like?
Not sure if it's relevant, but I have accidentally accquired an M-reg Daihatsu fourtak....masssoooosssive diseisel engine, real pipes an' all...no electronics as far as I can see....?
This will be the first diseisel I have 'owned'....hope it will tow well enough! Suspect I will get lorry-like fuel consumption?
Will have to investigate how to make the fuel costs spread more thinly?
Also, will have to get up earlier to get to work?
MAy keep the Fester for summer use? :rotfl:No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -

Farmer hack. Aint pretty but does the job. Id look at running it on waste veggie oil.0 -
You should get 28-30mpg out of it, but wont, because you'll be on call to all of your mates with softroaders to tow them out of whichever green lane they failed on.
Very basic and really a working tool compared to the more road friendly little brother Sportrak.0 -

I suppose it is possible that she was talking about the diesel gelling. Or do you know that it was her coolant that froze?0 -
As I posted earlier, I don't think it's a question of meeting specification. My experience is that my diesel car runs fine on either branded or supermarket diesel, but that whenever I have had a problem (rough running, reduced mpg) it has been after filling at Tesco, and that a tank of branded fuel has restored the performance. In other words, not the specification of the fuel as such, but problems with individual tankfuls.
I suspect it is a matter of occasional contamination rather than either sub-spec fuel or an engine that can't cope. But it has never happened with branded fuel, only with Tesco, and I draw my own conclusion from that.
With respect (genuinely), I suspect your observations are affected by confirmation bias -- if you go looking for problems you'll find them, and because the prevailing received wisdom is that the supermarket fuels are inferior, you notice very slight differences more when the supermarket fuel is in.
I know from my own personal experience that cars appear to have "off-days" where you'd swear they're suddenly slower, noisier, developed new rattles etc, that seem to vanish as soon as they come. I don't know why that is -- it's probably psychological as much as anything else -- but I do regularly experience the phenomenon.
Whenever TV shows, magazines or other such groups have run tests on supermarket fuel they've found minimal or no difference between them.
I'm prepared to accept that some fuels' additives may react positively with some engines, but this doesn't equate to the other fuels reacting negatively.0 -

(snip)

Problems three times in six years, each time after filling at Tesco. And not the odd bit of rough running: I'm talking about hard starting, lumpy idling, loss of power and a reduction on the fuel readout from a consistent 42-43 mpg down to 35-36. Problems went away after filling with another brand. I appreciate the politeness of your comment, but that isn't confirmation bias. It's observable fact from direct experience. Perhaps I have been unlucky (seriously), but it's enough to influence my fuel buying strategy.
And, as I have said above, I don't think it's anything to do with specification or additives. I suspect occasional contamination, possibly caused by poor handling or storage.
Not an expert, no insider knowledge, just relaying my own experiences. YMMV, literallyIf someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -
Can't be bothered to read the whole thread but if people want to pay extra for branded fuel then let them. I'm happy to fill up at the supermarket with the cheapest price and have never had a problem in any car I've driven since adopting this policy.0

You missed a word - I've fixed it for you though.
Stay lucky.
I've surprised some folks with the result of driving behind their own car and see what happens when the driver accelerates hard.
You often can't see your own smoke - but it's still there.
I get more mpg from branded fuel so the cheapo stuff is no saving in real terms.
The points from Tesco and Morrisons don't amount to much either.0 -
Well it seems I break all the motoring "rules".
- I drive a French car.
- It has an EGS
- It is a diesel, used predominately for short (1-2 mile) journeys 5 days a week with the occasional longer run on weekends.
- I only use supermarket fuel, and have done for the past 20 years.
I have never had a problem with DPFs DMFs etc.
On my last fill up I decided to try the local Esso, as the price was the same as Morrisons.
Since filling up my MPG has fallen from an average of 40-42 (which I have got from every tank since owning the car) to 36.
No other changes to car, tyre pressure checked fortnightly, no extra load in car etc. The only change has been the fuel. :think:0 - I drive a French car.
