Comps E: 30/09 close during the day- don't need bumping to say closed

No one wants to waste their limited time.
Exactly and bumping posts serves no useful purpose for the 92%+ of people use the board within the suggested guidelines/timeframes.
On a random selection of 4 comps closing yesterday less than 10% of the "thanks" counts on the posts were made on the last day, total thanks 927, thanks yesterday 65, approx 7%.
25 thanks yesterday/284 total thanks, 27/242, 10/324, 3/77(fb)0 -
Hmmmm I don't thank though.
*leaves the tin opener for that particular can of worms*Golly, I've got the newt pregnant...

That's no problem, there is no reason to suppose the thankers/non-thankers ratio is any different between either group
(Now I sort by added date when pushed for time the bumps don't show anyway)0 -
So mjm, do you always check on a bumped comp for useful info, even if you've ticked to show you've entered it? You have more stamina than me. It's very rare that I do this. I figure that if I've entered the odds are that I've done with the comp now. Just a thought.
Also, I've been wracking my poor brains over this and I'm wondering if there is a compromise that we can work out making use of Ren's thread on expiring comps to help the BGs. What if:
We made that thread a sticky on CCC.
When someone sees a comp that is dead, they can click to expire it. If that doesn't send it to GO they can then choose to add a link to Ren's thread saying PPE, if they want to?
Now then, this isn't perfect because we would then have to work out the best way to let peeps know that the comp has gone. Perhaps someone who posts PPE there can expect it to go pretty quickly, so they can then cross out their post, or write SORTED. Or perhaps when someone sees that a PPE comp has gone to GO they could then state that. I haven't quite worked that bit out, but I think this might be worth thinking about.
The advantages are that those of us who want to get rid of dead comps sooner, would have a way to do that without bumping them. It's a bit more work, but once we got used to it, I suspect we would quickly find the best system.
Go on then, tell me why this one won't work either:D:p
Blu X
If it's one I've entered I usually check in case there is something else that is needed to enter correctly, doesn't happen often but better to be sure than have wasted the time spent entering in the first place. Occasionally I look at ones I haven't entered on the off chance something may have changed to make it worth entering.
Posting the PPEs on Rens thread would be ideal for minimal disruption to the main board - It would take a little bit longer to do for the person who wants it expired although not much extra (I tried it just now with Rens thread open in another tab) and only those with an interest in expiring or with spare time to look at it then would need to see it.:beer:0 -
People waste their time doing a whole host of things which I deem pointless, but hay ho, we're all different I guess.
Better to alter the way you comp than to try and change other peoples bad habits.
I do click the thanks button mind.. because I'm British, and obsessive politeness is what we do.
Those strange folk across the pond mock us for it, stuff em!0 -

I see your point mjm, but by the same token we don't know how many people check bumped posts.
If for example only 3% of the forum check bumped posts, them you could argue that is more important to stop the 7% of the forum feeling annoyed by clicking on comps that have expired (and therefore finding comp expired posts helpful) than the 3% that get annoyed by the messages.
We don't know if more people benefit than don't with things like this, so I normally just have a little tut when I see the things that irritate me and then carry on dreaming of a nice big win
On a side note, have they chosen a new BG now?£630/ £20140 -

Apart from the fact that if the forum comping guidelines were followed there would be no 7% with the potential to be bothered - You are forgetting that out of the current 7% over 95%* of them get their entries in before a comp has closed during the day leaving a maximum of less than 0.5% who might be bothered by it.:)

Just realised if I switch the view to "by thread start time" the bumped ones don't show (bit slow there), although that would miss any useful bumps it could be handy when time is short.
I've been using the 'newest thread' function for a few months and it's definitely easier. I don't get side-tracked/bothered by bumped threads and I've found it a more logical way of working. Of course you have to bookmark daily threads cos you won't see them being bumped with new answers, but apart from that it works well IMO.0 -

Over 380 new comps added during the day between my visits and they were much quicker to get through in "newest thread" order (normally I can check several times a day but when I cannot this is the way to go).
I generally don't stray to dailys, I do a few instant wins (Dorset, Yeo etc but not the mags) and they are all bookmarked as direct links to the comp sites in a folder along with links to the threads of any daily answer ones.0
