Do you plan your weekends?

I was in the pleasant position of having a free weekend this weekend and but now I think about it, I feel like I wasted it a bit.

When I was growing up, there wasn't really much structure to weekends, we just lazed about, which is nice in one sense as it was a wind down from the week.

However, I want to start creating a bit of weekend routine, so that I use the time more productively and have something to say in work on Monday morning other than 'Oh, we did nothing, just had a drink etc'

My DH likes to watch the footy at a local pub most weekends which can hinder making plans occasionally, but still I would like us to spend some time together on the weekend doing something fun or relaxing together. We dont have any children yet, so it's just us two. Sometimes I moan about him going to watch the footy and his reply is 'Well what else would we be doing' which I dont have much of an answer for :) !

I would be interested to hear how you all spend your weekends and if they make a conscious effort to organise the time to maximise it.

Thanks!

enjoy the "no routine on a weekend" for as long as you can - because if you do have kids, you will then have a weekend routine as soon as the kids clubs/activities start ;).

I personally don't have a routine for the weekends, I work Monday to Friday, and have a routine for those days, so I don't want a routine for Saturday and Sunday as well.

You can make some kind of plan for some of your weekend, but "routine" to me suggests the same thing, week in and week out.

If I have gardening to do, that tends to get done at the weekend, but its not every weekend by any stretch of the imagination.

The only routine I have on the weekend is around exercise - always run on a Saturday morning when I get up, sometimes Sunday if we are going out for the day on Sat.

Often I will say to OH, I want to 'do something' this weekend and we plan either a walk or trip out somewhere or meal with friends (at ours or out). Other times we just see what happens.

I plan them up to the eyeballs, because that's just what I'm like, but I don't have a routine of what things happen on every weekend. I'm just planning that "On Saturday I'll get that done, then we'll do this, then on Sunday we're going there." Sometimes it even involves planning time where I will laze about on the sofa and do nothing, because I'm wanting a bit of that.

And I take a fair bit of pleasure in telling people at work when they ask what I did on the weekend "NOTHING, it was lovely!"
  • A 'free' weekend is a really rare treat for us - most weekends are booked up with events, plans to see family/friends (many aren't local so visits mean a weekend away). Often we're booked up several weeks or even months in advance.

I try to keep one weekend a month free or mostly free so that I have some time at home to get on top of washing, shopping and housework (I'm not filthy, I do stuff through the week too, but once in a while it's nice to get it all done in a big blitz).
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

Not sure what you mean by 'watching the footie'. Does he go for just one match or for every game that's on over the weekend? If it's just one game then that leaves loads of time to do other things.

I agree, don't have a 'routine' as that could get equally boring.

You and DH need to sit down and make a list of things that you both enjoy and then make some plans for occasional weekends. Oh and there's no reason why you shouldn't spend some time with girlfriends if that's something you enjoy.
That's what we do and then we really value the weeks where there's nothing planned and we can laze around at home.

The sort of things we do is go to theatre, go to cinema, eat out, have people round and eat in, go for a walk in the countryside/seaside, visit other towns and go sightseeing, go to live footie matches, go to the pub together to watch our own team if they're on, visit museums, galleries, NT properties, family celebrations etc. etc. Sometimes we go away for the weekend or just one night in a hotel, worth saving up for.

We spend most weekends away either horse racing or game fairs..We had a weekend home this last and i foolishly decided to go and look for a new hunting jacket at a outlet village quite near me....
Never ever again,It was mad and full of shopping zombies getting retail fixes...Have a look at the blank stare..Frightening..
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

I don't plan anything as all my working life I have worked at the weekend!
If I'm not working, I am slaving in the house, catching up on chores.
    I must do better :-)

Our weekends are planned. They don't necessarily go to plan, but there IS a plan.
  • DH and I don't plan as such, but as long as the weather isn't actually life threatening we do try and get out for a really long walk - usually including a bit of beachcombing. :)

Every few weeks we'll meet and have dinner with friends, go to a local auction, have a laugh at the village pub quiz - whatever - but it's certainly not written in stone.

Rest of a 'normal' weekend is taken up with the usual 30 mile round trip to the supermarket, house renovations and a takeaway-and-old-movie-night.

We believe in quality time together I suppose; he does his time with 'the boys' on a couple of weeknights and seems happy enough with his 'couple of pints' mixed with sporting stuff. :D

  • I hate organising stuff too far in advance and am slightly uneasy that free time has to be 'maximised'. It sounds very regimented and boot campy to me. My father never sits still for a minute and has to have every second of every day planned. It drives me bonkers as he never relaxes and never gives himself time to ponder which I think is a very important thing to be able to do.

Some weekends are planned if there's something special that I want/have to do but unless it's a birthday party or something which can only be done on a particular day then planning usually comes on Friday or Thursday at the earliest. The dog has to go out whatever day it is and if we do do something at the weekend, we have to decide whether he's coming with us or not. Beyond that, we take each weekend as it comes.
