Response to Jamie:
To be fair I was just offering benefit of experience as you were not sure if it would count and the OP seems to have been badly advised there. I have always had to declare any claim on either policy unfortunately.
I would still hit the garage with it as it could well be a case for mis-selling with the OP getting something they cannot use at all. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -

I was agreeing with you (I've always been honest with my insurance too), this dealer sounds like a right rogue though.0 -

She didn't claim on that bump and the new insurer only seems to specify actual claims rather than accidents.0 -

I think "saying what the OP wanted to hear" was spot on.
What a shock for a car salesman though... of course they never do that normally. This bloke must be a one off....What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -

*********** UPDATE***************
Just to update:
the dealership are going to confirm whether the car was insured as it should have been (system down),
they have confirmed that I am ineligible for the free policy and that they made a mistake in saying that I was eligible
and have so far made a formal offer to cover 350 towards a similar insurance policy by way of compensation.
I have pointed out that as a driver in my first year, 350 is not going to cover costs, and salesperson has asked me to bring in quotes to discuss further.Emergency savings: 4600

Try Tesco as a new driver, they've been very reasonable for my partner and they also currently have £50 Quidco.0
