Motability announcement

  • Thank you for this link. I'm glad to see Motability offering this support to those individuals who find themselves no longer eligible for the scheme.

My concern is what happens to individuals who may initially be told they are not eligible for enhanced rate of mobility under PIP yet appeal this decision successfully. If appeals take as long as they have for ESA, it could mean people have to hand back Motability cars and then get a new lease much later after months of hassle and inconvenience :(

I am hopeful I will have a seamless transition given that I require a drive from WAV ...... although don't want to be too confident .... never know, PIP may know of a miracle cure for me and I could soon be running the marathon! :rotfl:

To those leaving the Car Scheme as a result of a PIP reassessment:

    - a total of 7 weeks to hand the car back, 4 weeks paid by the DWP and 3 weeks paid by Motability
    - customers will need to return the car to the dealership in good condition and within the agreed time frame
    - those beginning the lease before January 2013 will get transitional support of £2k from Motability to enable them to buy a used car
    - those beginning the lease between Jan 2013 & Dec 2013 will get transitional support of £1k from Motability to enable them to buy a used car
    - those who leave Motability will continue to have their AP refunded on a pro-rata basis
    - help with arranging no-claims [history] insurance and other services such as breakdown cover will be given to leavers
    - leavers will be given an opportunity to buy Scheme their vehicle following the end of the lease
    - WAV leavers will be dealt with on a case basis including, where appropriate, enabling them to retain their current vehicle
    - for customers with adaptations, we will help them with the costs of fitting the same adaptations to a non-Scheme vehicle
    - powered wheelchair / scooter leavers will receive support with the objective of allowing them to retain their current product wherever possible

Definitely did the right thing in sending my mobility car back that I leased from Nov 2011 - It would have to go back in Nov 2014 anyhow so no support for me from them.

    Bought my own vehicle instead.

    Well done Andy.
  • I see there is now a Q&A page on the Motability website which goes into the detail of this 'transitional support' and explains how it will work in practice.

    Details here: http://www.motability.co.uk/understanding-the-scheme/pip-and-motability/q-and-a-transitional-support-package
  • Say if your current lease expires in 2015, and then take out another one, will you still be eligible for the £2,000 if you lose higher rate?

From the Q&A page on the Motability website, it appears the critical date is the date you FIRST became a Motability customer:

    Financial support

How much financial support can I expect as a car customer?

If you first became a Scheme customer before January 2013 and return the car to the dealership in good condition and within 21 days of the DLA payments stopping, you will be eligible for a one-off £2,000 transitional support package.

If you first became a Scheme customer in 2013 and return the car to the dealership in good condition and within 21 days of the DLA payments stopping, you will still be eligible for a one-off £1,000 transitional support package. This reduced, yet still significant, amount is because information on the Government’s plans for PIP has been publicly available since this point.

If you become a customer after January 2014, you will not be eligible for transitional support or payments. However, if you return the car to the dealership in good condition and within 21 days of the DLA payments stopping, you will be eligible for the standard £250 which is line with our general policy for early terminations.
There will also be support for scooter and powered wheelchair customers and arrangements made to help those with specialised mobility needs.
When will the money reach me as a car customer?

The money will be sent to you in the form of a cheque within 14 days of returning the vehicle.

From the above it seems the date of subsequent renewals of contracts is immaterial. However it is probably better to ring them and check.
  • It seems unfortunate - and perhaps rather odd - that there is no way to keep paying the weekly sum, and retain the car.
Perhaps motability is not willing to get into the whole issue of people falling behind on their repayments.

Given that these people are Patrons of Motability I'm surprised they've allowed such a favourable attitude towards disabled people.

Motability is a charity and was set up only to provide vehicles for those that have a HRM DLA award.

Lose the award - the car goes back!

As I have said before, with the current uncertainty of obtaining the relevant PIP award anybody taking the risk of leasing a motability car is putting their head in the sand.

£2000 won't buy a car of any quality, and the motability car WILL go back.

So there you are sat at home, no PIP, motability car repossessed, loss of a possible considerable amount of benefit income but you do have a cheque for £1000/£2000. Wow, what is going to be your next step? Go back to running bangers?
