I'd wear something like that to a formal black tie do though if I had the figure and the colouring and was 20 years younger :)

The thing with strapless dresses is they are unflattering on most people and not very comfortable. If you have big boobs you look like Nell Gwynne and heavier than you are. If you have small boobs they slip down and to avoid that you need to wear them tight at the bodice leading to armpit muffin top. Aside from standing very still in a formal pose for a photo, they don't do most women any favours aesthetically over an evening. But that doesn't make them inappropriate to wear.

Perhaps not but I think it's the train makes it inappropriate for wearing at anything other than a wedding, not the strapless aspect. Only imo of course. :D

Am reading on my phone and didn't see the train on the photo first time round! You are right. But the shape and style of the dress otherwise is ok for a formal black tie event I think. Unlike the sparkly silver and net concoction someone posted earlier in the thread which would make you look like the cabaret :D

I was the "someone" who posted that link. I wasnt suggesting that anyone went out and bought it. Which would be hard to do anyway as the link was from an american site. They actually do it in several colours. I liked it, you didnt and thats fine.

Pauline I think the problem with that dress was that its not a cocktail dress and anyone over 25 would probably look a bit ridiculous in it. It could be a nice dress for a young girl, but not for a woman at a formal event.

That's true.I'm very busty and generally look ridiculous in strapless!Small boobs can look equally odd, they aren't easy to pull off.

I looked awesome in a strapless wedding dress though, which is not too different from that one-deep red,white/silvery detailing on bodice, just a slightly different skirt.Far too good for the ex to ever have seen me in:D

I'm 25 and I would not wear it!

It was the sort of thing I would expect a very slim and pretty 16 year old to wear to the 'prom'. So maybe we are to assume that Pauline looks like a slim and pretty 16 year old, in which case, good for her :D

IMO strapless and how good it looks is more about shoulders, neck etc. than bust size. Bust shape and the fit of the bra might well impact.

Although it was by no means my style I liked the little blue strapless dress linked and thought it rather lovely if pulled of with similarly demure accessories.

The red dress, not so much. Cocktails, means standing circulating and chatting, often leaning close over hubbub of noise. Big skirts, even without a train, are a poor idea. Any train would be (besides object of ridicule from the merciless) antisocial and an accident waiting to happen.

Although I have dresses I make work for cocktail attire I actually don't own anything I would call a cocktail dress. A lot of what people where to 'balls' these days is actually cocktail dress that looks sorry for itself.

I actually love the dress, but couldn't possibly get away with it at any social function.

I would consider buying it for gardening in though, That's what I use my old formal wear for, housework, gardening and wearing around the house with huge woollen socks and pjs. :o

I dress like a three year old with a good dressing up box. Makes me happy. :)
