Cocktail Dress

I think the dress Pauline posted could work as a cocktail dress on the right person.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say sorry, OP, I don't think the dress you've chosen is dressy enough
To me cocktail dresses should be chiffon/satin type affairs. I love this dress:

I think a cocktail dress is one you could not wear at any other (less informal) time.
If you could get away with it at another time, then it's not formal enough.
Edit: I quite like that dress you've linked to, too. But given my lack of social life, I think I'd need to wear it just to join lir in her garden. :rotfl:Herman - MP for all!0 -

I think that description has nailed it the closest.Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

I'd wear all the dresses linked to in my garden, I'd wear von's dress as day wear happily, and the op's dress. I've seen continental colleagues of dh's wearing strapped silk dresses we would consider cocktail, with jackets through the day as office wear then leave the jackets at work to go out in the evening.
Heck, I'd wear the wedding dress to do the chickens in. Not the horses though, I'd ride in it, but not muck out. No one steps on a Train like a horse does.0 -

Now see I disagree there, I think the wedding one is too pretty for chickens. I'd probably wear it watching afternoon tv or something,
God lir......your eccentricity is catching. :rotfl:Herman - MP for all!0 -

Following on from AJ's description, so a cocktail dress is one you'll never be able to wear again and it'll probably need dry cleaning (more so if you have been farming in it) :rotfl:
I have only ever had to buy one cocktail dress, it was black satin-type material with flocked spots on it (strapless.) I got extra wear out of it afterwards by ruching the front so it was mega short and wearing it to a rock venue with thigh length boots.
It happened to be the night my friend and I got a lift home in the limo belonging to one of the bands and I stepped on the hem getting out and one side of my ruching unravelled and left it lopsidedI was a very wilting peacock that night :rotfl:

Long enough to cover the essentials, short enough to capture the imagination.
I was taught the more the chap is wrapped (& in Black Tie, he's covered) then the implication is that this is not a fleshfest, so stunning stockings but not acres of arm etc...0
