Extending a semi detatched when neighbour has too

I'm looking at extending my house instead of moving as it should hopefully be cheaper. (£60k cheaper) Our house is connected fully to a neighbour on the left (as you look at the house) and via a garage to the right. The house to the right has extended above their garage to add another bedroom and have a bigger bathroom. This is flush against their boundary over their garage. We would like to extend above our garage, but not fully up against their wall (leave a meter gap or something) so we don't become a terraced. This would still give us 4 bedrooms, a bathroom and ensuite which would be lovely. But the main question is is it possible to do this or as they built first they "win the extension war".

Obviously I'll be asking a builder what he thinks and ask for a quote for everything tomorrow if I can, but being impatient I thought I'd ask on here to see if anyone has come up against this?

Cheers

Yeah, sorry, that might have helped a little bit:

EDIT: we would extend flush with the front of our house and go back a little next to their wall.

The problem with what you suggest is that the new wall to the side of the extension could not be built up off the existing garage side wall but being 1 metre inboard will be over fresh air. Would involve some serious structural supporting steelwork or else build a new supporting wall on the new wall line and compromise the garage.

So its not really possible and would cost too much? :(

  • Hmmm, not too sure myself, but hang on in there and some experts will come along and post soon. No disrespect meant to anotherbaldrick there either, okay?! :p

  • I can post the layouts of what I was hoping to achieve if it helps?

  • Sure, but I think you'd like to see this done to your neighbours house personally :p

  • Just to backtrack on your image. You say you want to extend flush to the front of your house, presumably to where the bins are and make this extension full width, stepping in 1M when you get to the line of the existing garage. So the extension will be 2 storey at the front and sail over the garage . Do I read you right ?

  • You won't get the money back with that idea.

Could the roof space be converted?
