Who Do You Bank With (and why)?

  • I don't have a bank account - I have a Building Society account with Coventry Building Society. I do have a credit card with the Post Office (they don't charge interest on international charges, and I went abroad earlier this year) and MBNA (because I like their reward points system and they were the only ones to agree to give me one when I was 18 and just going off to uni). I used to bank with Barclays, but I feel very strongly about ethical banking and for me, the ethical practices of building societies way outweigh any financial advantage provided by the high street banks.

ETA: My savings account and ISA are also with Coventry Building Society. Although that reminds me - I have a bank account with Barclays and a credit account with Barclaycard that have nothing on them and I need to close down.

Nope. Limited poll options means sacrifices somewhere; plus the way the poll is structured will get me the results I am looking for and choosing bigger banks will allow the results to be meaningful to others too.

I would say that RBS is my main account in terms of usage - my wages aren't paid in there but I do have a couple of DD's going out of it. I like their app and the online banking, however I don't like the fact their branches tend to be out of easy reach  I also have a chequebook on this account which is handy.
My wages and bills go into and out of Barclays and my spending money is transferred out into RBS. Their branches are more easily accessible but I don't like their app, their mobile banking or their stupid policy of only sending out statements for my particular account type every three months

main - Santander - started off as a Girobank account years ago when they were the cheapest for charges for cheques. They've never done anything badly enough wrong to persuade me to move. The 123 cashback keeps me there now - but their internet banking is very user unfriendly if you actually want to do anything rather than just check your account. Post Office usage was a draw in the past but too many have closed to make this a major factor

secondary - and SWMBO's main account - Nationwide. Can't remember why I opened it - probably as a backup and for overseas transactions which is a reason to keep it. Plus free travel insurance. Reasonable internet banking

tertiary - Metrobank, for overseas transactions and where MasterCard is needed. I use it so little (twice in two years apart from transactions just to exercise it.) that I'm exercised about keeping it. Internet banking a bit - well I don't know what word to use but I don't like it

Travelex Global prepaid card - used once in 2 years - regarded as a backup source of overseas cash - if it wasn't a tenner to cash it in I probably would

Santander, also been with them since they were Girobank and never had any problems, find the online banking easy and now the 123 Acc pays me to pay my bills, also have savings and ISA's with them..

An interesting observation, maybe I should refine my statement to include something about looking at the bigger picture too. All the best.

First Direct - long term customer, wages, regular saver, never had an incentive payment :-(
    Halifax - fivers
Santander - cash back on bills, 3% interest on 123 account
Lloyd's - still getting 4% till end of October
Nationwide - travel insurance and 5% interest
Co-op - opened for incentive, now unused.
