Connecting wirelessly

I've been away from my present address for 6 months.
When the missus tried to connect the laptop wirelessly, to the connection I'd previously set up and was working perfectly, it wouldn't happen.
Of course I told her to 'let me do it'.:rotfl:
But I've played around and tried resetting etc but can't connect.
I also think I've messed up the password which I'd forgotten anyhow and never wrote down.
Is there some way I can connect even if it means starting right from the beginning and if I do that how can I delete the previous password etc.
I've gone right down in my missus's estimation.
Help me redeem myself, please.:embarasse

What router are you using? If you connect a pc or laptop using an Ethernet cable you won't need to use the wireless password to connect. You'll then be able to connect to the routers admin page (which may or may not have a password set up). Mine is available on 192.168.0.1, and yours will probably be something similar.
There will also probably be a 'reset to factory defaults' button that will reset all passwords. I think on mine its one of those where you have to stick a pin in a small hole to press it.0 -
Well what you do is, you get a hammer...
Just kidding
Frugal_mike's advice is good. Just wanted to add that if you do need a password to get into the router's admin page, the username and password are usually written on a sticker on the router somewhere.
Note that the password to get into the admin page and the wireless password are not usually the same, unless you configured them to be so.
The vast majority of the time the router's IP address is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, so plug in and try to navigate to either of those two. What will your verse be?

Your laptop has 'forgotten' the network or password. Log int the router interface as above (using ethernet to connect) and recover it from there. Then you'll need to re-enter it into your laptop once.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Thanks for all that.
I'm in Singapore at the moment and the laptop was bought there so maybe the 192.... address won't work but iirc during my messing up procedure I did see an address which maybe will help me do the needful.
I'll give it a go tomorrow.
Thanks again.
I did wonder however why it just didn't carry on again from where it was 6 months ago as it was working then even after a daily re start. It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -
The 192.168.0.1 address belongs to the router, its nothing to do with the laptop. Your laptop will get its ip address from the router by dhcp (unless you have configured it to work differently).
And I can assure you IP addresses work the same way in Singapore as elsewhere. 192.168.0.0/24 is (one of) the private address ranges reserved for use in private networks. The private ranges allow the same ip address to be used by different machines without causing address conflicts.0 -
Oh, did you mean that you want to connect to the router from Singapore? in which case you need the public facing ip address given to the router by the isp. it may not he possible though, the admin console is often not available other than from machines on the local network for security reasons.0

Would it be easier to re set all by that I mean everything or will I lose data. It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -
Well if you have everything there with you then it doesn't matter whether you're in the UK or singapore. You also don't need the router to be connected to the internet. Just power up the router and the laptop, and connect them with an Ethernet cable. The laptop should then obtain an Ethernet address from the router. You can check this by opening a command prompt and typing 'ipconfig' followed by pressing Return
When you say 'reset everything', what do you mean by that?0 -
Just an update.
I bought an ethernet cable, the others were being used on my desktop and a connection to my Smart TV.
Used the 192.168.0.1 address and got through to the router .
Pressed the reset button on the router.
Went through the user name and password details but still couldn't get a wireless connection, so tried it a few times and now can't even get BB connection to the laptop.
I've taken this laptop to UK, France and Spain and had no problems getting wireless connections in those places and for 2 or 3 years never had problems in Singapore.
Any other suggestions??
Oh the error when I was trying to connect this time was Error 815.It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -
What you've now done is reset the router to the factory defaults-which you didn't need to do. You were advised simply to log in and then view or change the wireless password.
You'll now need to set the router up (using ethernet) from scratch with the correct info for the ISP that you are using.
Your router log in and password are entirely different to those used for your wireless access or your ISP access., because they do entirely different things.
Get your ISP access sorted, then set up the wireless again. then remove the ethernet cable and connect wirelessly. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
