If £250 is a lot to the charity concerned why wasn't it noticed PDQ? £250 going out of my bank account 'by mistake' would be noticed within a week at most. Some/one/people at the charity have screwed up big time not the Bank. Does the charity have a Treasurer?

yes the charity has a treasurer - the treasurer does not receive the bank statements- the secretary who does ALL the banking receives one copy of the QUARTERLY bank statements and the ACCOUNTANT receives the other QUARTERLY bank statement
we have not historically had online banking so had no access to transactions other than via the QUARTERLY bank statements

I am sure you would notice £250 going out of your bank account within a week- as I would I with my personal banking ( online)
however this is a charity bank account and we are only able to have QUARTERLY bank statements - hence they can only be checked once a quarter

t no point have I said that this should NOT have been picked up by the secretary or the accountant- all through my posts I have admitted that - however as with a lot of posts on these fora - the original QUESTION has been diluted to discuss who is to blame
once upon a time this was a place to get advice and answers - and to those of you who have taken the time to offer genuine advice - Thank you

to the rest of the posters who have sought to ridicule and belittle me for trying to sort out a problem and try to prevent a similar occurrence - if you are all such experts - I hope you are sharing your expertise with some voluntary organisations ( on a free basis of course) in order to help them - however I suspect you don't and won't.

Has it occurred to you that the people who answered your post did so without charging anyone for their time? You don't have to formally volunteer for a charity in order to add value to the community, you know.

Whether you liked all the answers is neither here nor there. Your conclusion about the people whose answers you didn't like are at best entirely irrelevant to this thread.

to be fair- no it hadn't occurred to me and you are quite correct they are giving their time - some of them have offered advice and information which will help us in the future - a lot of them have simply sought to denigrate our volunteers for not noticing the discrepancy - which was entirely irrelevant to the original question

I dont suppose you would like to thank them for their time volunteering would you?

we don't have debit cards -we are aware that if a debit card is cloned ( no doubt you'll tell me THAT is impossible too!! ) that the whole account could be cleared out and that it can take weeks for the banks to refund the money - our organisation can't afford that to happen.

no matter how "stupid" you believe I am being- I am only trying to protect money donated to our charity

there are ENOUGH fraudulent charities out there claiming to be donating funds to all sorts of recipients, who never see a penny of donated funds - this sort of thing can destroy the public's faith in charities

honestly who would have thought that trying to PROTECT money possibly donated by MSE'rs - would have opened me up to such ridicule and dismissal? :(
I never said that you were stupid or IMO ridiculed you.
What I have informed you is that there is a process in place to refund your account should a fraudelent D/D be set up.
It was you who wants the bank to make a special effort to contact you or another signatory to confirm when a new D/D is setup - this will not happen ; sorry.

I am sorry - but NOWHERE in ANY of my posts have I said I have asked or expected the bank to contact me when a new DD is set up

i have posted links outlining the checks that organisations should undertake to try and verify the identity of people setting up DD's
which I now know won't be done

I have asked if it is possible to find out who set up a DD
but NOWHERE have I stated I expect the bank to contact me or the other signatory prior to setting up a DD
