got the link for the choosing not to take a break? I thought you had to take 20 mins. We were always made to if we said we had a lot on and would work lunch. We were told no you have to take at least 20 mins.

It is true, you cannot be forced as in led by the hand and made to have a break, however the law on what you are entitled to is there to protect you and a tribunal would take a dim view, of the employer if breaks are skipped regularly, so your employer is probably right to try and make you, for your own sakes ( although I hardly ever take a break, but then never been forced to either)

It is on the gov website I posted as a link earlier on the thread but on one of the attached pages. That is what made me think that there is no law about breaks in work and if there ever was one, it has quietly slipped away since. I do recall there was a scientific study behind the reasoning but as with a lot of science that governments* do not like they will look for an alternative view even if it is minor and controversial (watch for this in the EU airline pilot debates...from both sides - and as an antidote for the latest global warming releases).

    * If there ever was a law, it would certainly have been repealed under New Labour rather than the coalition.
  • Oh - one minus.. the massive open plan office and the lights...

Not used to it at all, used to working in small rooms with max 3 people and lights off with small lamps on desks (if/when needed) rather then those horrible lights that give me headaches.

Massive open plan offices - who's idea was that?

Very difficult to concentrate with like 200 people on one floor...

He is getting two breaks of 15 minutes which is not sufficient for the legal minimum.

Paragraph 3 - as I pointed out before.

Sounds like my old job. I miss it :( I disappeared into an empty meeting room this week to read something as I was struggling to concentrate in the open plan office with conversations going on all around me. When I got back to my desk, I was asked where I had been.

At my old work, as long as I was in the office between 10 and 12 and 2 to 4 and I met my (challenging) targets, nobody cared. I could also work from home if I wished. My boss really didn't care and trusted me to do the job in whatever way suited me best. Going the other way to someone watching over you all the time and a culture where employees aren't trusted is quite difficult. I'm not even allowed to listen to music at my desk to drown out surrounding noise in case I'm listening to music instead of working.

My last job was a lot more structured. I did have a good line manager who allowed us to work in a meeting room if they were empty. I'm not currently being challenged in my current job which is what I hate, I feel like if managers kept a better eye on us they would spot that v and give me more work. Do think I have been lucky to not have had terrible employers.
  • Sorry to hear that some people are being micro-managed and have to account for every step they take. Guess some people like that (?) but I would not.

I am out and about, work from home when i want, work at the office, library or in fact anywhere with an internet connection. Meet with my supervisor every few weeks to see where I am up to, but apart from that I could be on the moon as long as I get the work done I am supposed to.

Oh the joy of super-flexible working.

Plus my supervisor is there in the office, end of the phone or email when I want a chat about something I need help with.
Couldn't go back to having to account for every movement I made.

I start 7.30am and finish around 4.30pm mon to fri. I get a 20 min break and a 45 min lunch, but usually work through both and shovel a sandwich when I have time. I then do about 10 hours of lesson planning and 8 hours of marking on top if that each week, so I guess that's about 63 hours a week.

13 weeks holiday though, where I only do about 15 hours a week.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Unpaid breaks. I work just over 8 hours a day. We get a half hour and a 45 minute break. I smoke but do not take extra fag breaks, I would be sacked on the spot for doing that, I can manage fine waiting til my breaks for a smoke, to be honest I'm usually too busy to even think about it the rest of the time. I'm quite happy with my breaks.
