Most of my work places in the last year have been 8 hour shifts from 10am to 6pm with an hour break. But sometimes I work late for no extra pay, which I don't mind.

My last job I worked 8 hour shifts. With 2 hours on one hour off, but in the one hour 'off' you have to spend some of it writing a handover and be on call for other duties.
  • Our work environment leaves much to be desired but lately I've been doing 9:30 to 4:30 (no breaks other than walking around or zoning out in an empty conference room, my choice).

If the boss is out of the office I work at home, as I can get to the office 10 minutes by bus if need be. And it gives me the chance to do a big fry up in the morning on a weekday.

Don't think I'll get this "luxury" in my next job...
  • 21 hours in one job, usually 7 hours a day but flexible and sometimes work from home.
Run my own business the rest of the time so as many hours as I can fit in or need to.

Contracted 36 hrs p/w. We have flexitime, core hours are 10-12 and 2-4. I tend to start between 9.00 and 9.30 and finish between 4.30 to 5.00 but sometimes stay later if there's a lot of work on. We have to take 30 minutes lunch minimum but can take up to 2 hours (12-2).
  • I work 40 hours a week (maybe more if I do a bit in the evening) and I work from home - so I take whatever breaks I want to. As long as the work gets done, no one complains
  • What's the law on 2 breaks folks? I wouldn't fancy one 20min break in 12hrs...rather have 2 shorter ones...
  • I'm contracted to work 9-5.30 with an hour's lunch at some point in the middle.

I don't take a lunch break though, take 15 minute fag breaks instead and take half an hour's overtime per day. Don't need to pay for lunch and earn a little more, suits me just fine!

Commute is 35-40 minutes each way. I think my contracted hours are 37.5 but I probably do closer to 45-50 most weeks. I don't get paid overtime or TOIL but I like the freedom to manage my own fate. I'm usually in somewhere between 7.30 and 9.00 but I've been known to start at 5.45 when it's really busy. Great Aussie culture (work hard play hard), no-one clock-watches, and they really take care of their staff - if I fancy a 2 hour lunch break I can take it, and if I fancy going early I can. Basically we're expected to manage our workload like adults. Our new building is one of those super-trendy ones built around a central atrium like an MC Escher drawing - staircases everywhere. Free food (toast + trimmings, cereal, fruit) and drink (hot, cold, lots of variety), and also a fairly decent cafeteria on-site. Excellent central kitchen area on each floor with tables, chairs, sofas, armchairs, typical kitchen equipment (fridges, microwaves); we often grab a coffee and have meetings there instead of booking a meeting room (as long as we're not discussing confidential stuff). Every fortnight we have a team lunch there and someone goes out to grab a food order for us. It's a great place to work - don't think I could go back to a place that's micro-managed and regimented.

I work at night doing 10 hour shifts and get 45 minutes break, split into one 30 minute and one 15 minute.
