Oooh, thanks for your post. I'm about to this account and I'd not thought about using Gormet Society membership when travelling.

It's a choice between Gormet Society, a magazine subscription and VUE cinema cinema tickets. I never read magazines and rarely bother with the cinema and my nearest VUE is in London anyway so maybe Gormet Society is better to use there than the cinema tickets!

I am also trapped with Gourmet Society auto renewal. I got an email from Gourmet about renewal which was sent to spam directly. So I did know anything about it. Now i am calling them and emailing them. Hopefully I will get my money back.

PLEASE DON'T SUBSCRIBE TO ANY MEMBERSHIP WHERE YOU HAVE TO GIVE YOUR BANK OR CARD DETAILS. ITS A TRAP TO TAKE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY.

Anybody had refund from them for same problem?

I just found this offer and worked my way through it.
At the point at which you select button to apply , further down the page, which you may miss as it's below the select button- are the terms which say if you upgrade ( ie free cinema offer too) you'll get auto renewed. So it is there..
  • Hi Govs - not sure if you're responding to a message I sent, but I'm in a similar situation. Gourmet Society took my year's subscription because I hadn't responded to their email to cancel (the bit about cancelling is hidden right down at the bottom). I foolishly thought that since I rang and mailed them straight away to explain the mistake that they would refund it but no matter what I say, including that I could ill afford it, they refuse to budge! Don't deal with them!

My mum has had the same problem. Auto renewal is a disgusting practice. Surely this is something that MSE should be looking at highlighting and warning people against.

Could someone look at this practice of Gourmet Society's please? They may stick to the letter of the law but they are clearly taking advantage of those who don't scroll down to the bottom of a lengthy email amongst other things! They won't even let me cancel (and take their admin charge) because I needed to cancel within 14 days of taking out the initial 3 months trial.
  • Had a 3 month trial offerred my bank for the Gourmet Society and they have 'renewed' my membership without permission - taking £40 from my account. They will not refund the money. BEWARE

I used to be with them but the offers changed for the worse and times you can use the card are now more restrictive. Another word of warning - just looked on their website for the Newcastle area, at least 4 of the restaurants they show have closed down, not recently either so no excuse to be advertising them.
