I haven't read all of this thread yet but I was wondering are you supposed to freeze the flour in the bag it came in first and then empty the flour out of the bag and into an air tight container to be stored in a cool, dark cupboard?
  • Sorry to resurrect this thread.

We've had this problem for well over 3 years and despite storing all our dried goods in glass or tightly-sealed plastic containers, they still enter the containers. They've even gone into sealed Jars of brand new honey and syrup. When you empty the plastic lock/seal tubs, you can see little indentations where they appear to have nibbled on the plastic
  • Ewww - wondering if someone can help. I was tidying out my baking ingredients cupboard today and found that a bag of SR flour (only a couple of months old at most) had teeny insects (I'm assuming they were weevils) crawling in the bag. There were also some older bags of stuff (which I've now gotten rid of) but was wondering if there's anything I can do to keep weevils away.

Bin the lot! I have had a weevil attack and it wasnt nice!!!! Seal everything in lock and lock boxes and bleach the cupboards. Have they made it into the cupboards yet??

I believe freezing the flour when you buy it kills them.

I always keep cereals and flour in sealed plastic boxes they seem to be ok , haven't had weevils for a long long time.. I guess they may of been in the bad when you bought it though if its only a fairly recent purchase..

As soon as you get home from shopping put the bag of flour in a plastic bag and then put it in the freezer for 24 hour's.

I keep my flour in the freezer permanently and take out what I need a couple of hours before I need it. That way I don't get a problem. I had an infestation like yours years ago and it was a big wake up call for me!

  • Thanks so much for your replies. The freezer thing is great advice! The bag of plain flour I bought yesterday has now gone in the freezer and I did actually bin the SR (as much as I hate waste) as it's made me feel really squeamish.
    Thank you everyone :T

I hate to be the voice of doom and gloom but they can hang around for months. I had weevils that spread to nearly every cupboard in the kitchen :eek: Bin everything that's in an opened packet, buy only stuff you can keep in a Lock n Lock box and eventually they will die. But it took months for mine to die out completely, even after putting everything in air tight boxes.
In future put flour in freezer as suggested as it will kill any existing weevils.
