DVLA Scam...?

OMG I feel like such a FOOL!

Just googled "DVLA" and went to first hit, assuming it would be the *actual* DVLA - went through the process of ordering what I thought was a new licence from the DVLA to replace a lost one, paid my fee, and then have checked email to see it is actually a company called "Driverlicence.uk" and all they do is post me the flipping forms!!!!!!!
Contacted bank (Natwest) to stop payment, even though payment is pending they say they can't do anything as the card I used is a guarantee to pay the fee - nothing to be done, but at least I can warn other people about this - I was just in a hurry to get in done over lunch hour and stupidly only skimmed through the site...

AVOID at all costs drivinglicence.uk.com !!!!!!

Operated by....
Caveat Viator Limited, registered in England and Wales. Company Number 8230363
Registered Office: 145-157 St John Street, London, EC1V 4PW

ARGGGHHHHHH!

Apparently there are similar sites relating to UK passports...?

How can you say its a scam when the website clearly says US / DVLA with 2 sets of services that they provide.

    "quote.. Our service.. £50 - £97 DVLA = Free"

Before that site allows you to input any details it points out their charges, and that they are in addition to any dvla charges.

Unless you click to say you agree to the charges you cannot continue.

Why blame anyone but yourself, and why waste your bank's time asking them go get you a refund?

I admire their gumption in calling it Caveat Viator - Latin for (roughly) Driver Beware.

Shows their general attitude, doesn't it?

First result in Google (for me) for DVLA is:

Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency - GOV.UK

    https://www.gov.uk/government/.../driver-and-vehicle-licensing-agency‎
This plan sets out what the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will do between 2013 and 2014. Driving License. 6 September 2013 — News story ...Driving and transport - ‎Contact DVLA - ‎Order forms online from DVLA - ‎About

If you contact the company you paid there have been instances of a full/partial refund being given.

Sorry you've wasted money but, really, it's pretty sensible to read what you're doing online when it involves your credit/debit card.

Lots of these scam site out there, and plenty on MSE who say they are not a scam (clearly without understanding the word at all).

Sad you were tricked and a shame these sites are legal at all but there you go.

Similar scam sites exist for passports, driving licence, theory test, E111 and a bunch of other things.

It looks like the OP clicked the Google ad at the top rather than the actual search result.

Yes it does, and judged from at least three other replies to this thread so far, we have a generally screwed up attitude pervading amongst MSE'ers who think they know what's fair in business.

It's a scam. It preys on typical mistakes people make when they are searching for a government agency online.¨It relies upon the statistical likelihood of normal people being distracted/lost just long enough to fall into the trap.

    Shall we say it again?

It sets a trap, and it then proceeds as a scam.

    That's spelled S-C-A-M.
From the late great Tommy Cooper: "He said 'I'm going to chop off the bottom of one of your trouser legs and put it in a library.' I thought 'That's a turn-up for the books.' "
  • Found another company charging to check forms for you. Just to clarify, is this also a scam? ;)
