My bet is something specific to the overflow, as the running water has been eliminated by the freshly run water in glass not smelling but a sink full with plug in does...

Just filled the sink with the plug in, it smells

It sounds like the overflow needs cleaning if the smell is still there with the plug in.

Not always easy to do, but the way I do it is to make up a really strong solution of soda crystals and very hot water in the sink with the plug in, filled up to just by the overflow.

Then turn the hot tap on to a speed just enough to make the solution run down the overflow, you need to stay by the sink while doing this just in case the tap flow increases.

After about 10 mins, there will have been a good flow of the soda crystal solution down through the overflow that should have cleaned it out.

Bleach will kill any germs, but not necessarily get rid of the smell, or what is causing the smell, that's where soda crystals, bicarb and vinegar or flat coke come in as they dissolve the gunk that's down there which will be a combination of soap scum, hair, skin flakes and fat from your skin.

  • Hi, apologies for not replying sooner and for appearing rude by ignoring you, I wasn't - just not had time to post online.

Will reply indepth later, but just a quick update to say soda crystals did nothing, and coke didn't either :(
.... but thanks for the tips/advice.

Try and be back later tonight, cheers.
  • Once upon a time, in a different country when Mini AO ate Yellow Melons like Oranges, we had an overflow issue.

The overflow in the downstairs sink became blocked, then one day this thing popped out..

So we gave it a gentle tug, and this popped out..

The overflow pipe had become blocked, the melon seeds had made there way into the sink, and down the pipe...

    Hey presto..

Not surprised - I don't think its the waste as I stated above.

    Cheers

Make sure the overflow is covered as well.

    Done, no difference.

    Definitely nothing growing in there.....
  • Well, today, after copious amounts of cheap rola-cola, soda crystals, bleach and vinegar/boiling water, I dismantled the trap and it was clean as a whistle.

Overflow seems clean too, I even poked a 12" cable tie down into the overflow hole and really poked around but nothing gunky/hairy/growing came back up and out.

What surprised me though is I expected it to go down into the overflow hole then poke out where the overflow hole meets the downpipe (before the trap bend) in the sink - but it didn't.

I am totally baffled. And what made it worse is when my other half came round, within 30 seconds of running the hot tap, she yelled "ooooh, that smell is terrible!".

    Just great eh?

Thanks though and apologies for the continued suggestions.
