£1 for three big bottles of coke, in the unlikely event that it doesn't work then get the trap apart

edited to add: and make sure you pour lots down the overflow too

Just filled the sink with the plug in, it smells
Thanks. So its not hot water running down the plughole leading to smells from the drains then. So that kinda rules out drains.

BTW you have a good depth of water seal on your trap so that looks OK although the joints look stressed.

I'm suspecting something bacterial. I think you should get someone in to give your DHW system the once over tbh.

    Cheers

Thanks, but again, what will coke do that boiling hot water and bleach can't?

    Okay then.

What on earth is a good depth of water seal on my trap?

The joints look stressed? What? What does that mean? Am I gonna mess things up taking the trap apart then? :(

Never mind the joints, I'm bloody stressed. The smell is awful :(

Back to my original post, "hello, I'd like to report that my bathroom sink hot tap smells of curry when I run it. Can you come out and... hello? HELLO? (drrrrrrrrrr......... phone hung up at other end)"

What's DHW? ______ hot water I take it?
Don't forget I live in a rented council flat and they don't like being told what problems tenants have and self-diagnosing tenants telling them what the problem is..... :(

I clean the u-bend with a few teaspoons of bicarb and then pour vinegar down. (seal the sink overflow hole first)

It worked for me. I took the u-bend off afterwards and it was clear.

If the stink is from the water itself then the cold water tank needs to be investigated.

Best to clean teeth in the kitchen as the water is normally coming straight off the water mains.

I clear and clean my pipes by emptying a bag of washing soda crystals or powder (99 pence in Home Bargains) into the sink and pouring boiling water over it so it dissolves the soda and it runs down the plughole.

If the trap under my bath/shower is blocked (usually a mix of loose hair and soap/shampoo scum) I use a bottle of Mr Muscles sink unblockers - it's in a large orange plastic bottle. Leave it overnight then run the tap for a couple of mins to swill down the pipes.

Hope you can get it sorted soon, sounds nasty.

If it's just the one pipe, then you'll have to investigate that tap and the entire length of pipework to see if anythng has fallen on, got stuck to, or been shoved up it [ got any mates who like practical jokes?]

If it's all of them, phone the council and tell them whatever you have to to get them out.

I'm baffled too. If nothing comes of you investigating it, then a plumber is your only hope obi-wan.

The thumbs down icon is likely to reduce my further contruibution to your thread.

Google it. Its the water seal in your trap that stops the nasty niffs coming out of the sewer.

They are not squarely seated with pipework at angles.

Tell me where you have imparted this data before now.
and they don't like being told what problems tenants have and self-diagnosing tenants telling them what the problem is..... :(
Don't self-diagnose then. Just tell them there is a horrid smell coming out of your hot water tap. Be prepared from them to argue that its your waste though as so many have here but from what you've said it isn't.

You miss the point. If you run the tap with the plug in do you get the smell?

    Cheers
Make sure the overflow is covered as well.
