I cant get a mortgage but have 100k. I need to keep some for a rainy day so have a budget of 80k.

I can move anywhere as not committed to anywhere with work I can do my work wherever.

Can you get a 'nice' 2 bed for that amount of money. ie nice area, and no work needed doing.???

Where I live you cant buy a shed for that money.

Im quite excited at starting my life again, but simply dont know where to look??

Any ideas anyone? any links? Can it be done?

Bit background, Im 45 divorced but want to start a new life, countryside would be nice but open to any ideas.

    Thanks!:)

I can personally vouch for the flats at The Lindens, they are good size two-bedroom in a nice area with good transport links and well-tended communal gardens. Most have a garage.

Do you think if they gain independence, they'll send the English back over Hadrian's Wall? Even half-breeds, like me?

Last time I looked at a map, both Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire were in Wales, not England :p

But they haven't always been ;-)

Mmmm, don't think my definition of *nice* would include Rowner, which is probably the only place in Gosport you'd get a house for £80k :p Ditto Paulsgrove and the like.......although marginally better I s'pose than *junky Jaywick* in Essex where you can still pick up a detached for under £40k

Probably qualifies for several types of assistance as it's the most deprived place in England.

You can get somewhere for £80,000 in Derbyshire if you are prepared to "shop around", we have some lovely countryside too. :)

  • MIL moved to Prestatyn last year, I had a bit of a look at house prices and they seemed very reasonable and the areas looked quite nice. Some people are mentioning BB4, BB5, we used to live in BB5 which is Accrington, there are some very nice parts and some very rough parts, there are also large areas of town that are pretty much exclusively Muslim communities not meant as a racist comment, it's just that these are very tight knit communities and you may not feel it's for you, if you buy a house in these areas you may struggle to sell at a later date, same would apply to Rossendale, Burnley, Blackburn, Nelson etc.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

Just to clarify, I added southern Pembrokeshire in case the OP had ruled out Wales. I said it was more 'English' than many other areas. This is reflected in place names, road signs etc.

Personally, I'd be happy to live in any part of west Wales, and I'd be there now, were not other members of my family against the idea.

However, there's more to it than simply strange place names and sing-song accents. Like any other area with character, where traditions are still strong, one has to be comfortable with the overall feel of the place to live there happily and fit in. ;)

I think ognum's suggestion to rent before purchase is excellent advice.

    Don't forget north Pembrokeshire! :)

We're more 'Welsh' here, but with that comes friendliness, real community spirit and low, low crime rates.

The coast and scenery aren't bad either ;) and you could even get a sea view for your £80K. :)
