It does depend on your insurers. I had a query when I was fitting a new back door and rang the insurers to ask.

They merely said they had no requirements - at all - as regards the types of lock fitted.

I hope you have this in writing , I'm yet to find a single insurer who doesn't specify a minimum standard of locks fitted to final exit doors. Its usually BS3621 , who is your insurer?

If I did get another lock - are the barrels identical ?
We have several copies of keys cut - for relatives to be able to get in to feed the cats if we are away - and it would be easier if we didn't have to replace the keys...

    I assume that a barrel is a barrel ?

If you get an identical replacement lock, it's a very simple like for like swap. You won't have to touch the barrel at all.

No but they can re-use the old cylinder (with old keys) and replace the back plate which from what the OP says is the faulty part .

Thanks - I have emailed ERA and await a reply
The lock cost us about £20 from B&Q 18 months ago - so should not have failed so soon ......
I hope that they send me a direct replacement - since I don't want to start drilling mounting holes in the door !!

Yes - that is a good result. Well done. They'll probably just send you the whole thing as it is much easier and cheaper for them to do so. Just reuse your existing cylinder to preserve your key usage.

    Cheers

They're very good when there are manufacturing defects or faults with their locks :)
