Is a Yale Type lock "handed" ?

We have a newish (inner) front door with a yale type (nightlatch ?) lock on it
The problem is that it appears to be fitted incorrectly - the latch drops down rather than goes up - which means that, gravity tends to lock the door !!
Hence the question - are Yale type locks different for left and right hinged doors ?

Don't think so
You understand the problem - do you ?
The fact that the latch only works one way - ie) gravity makes it drop down and this locks the door - which could be difficult , if I am outside !!
Our door is a left hinged (looking at it from inside) and it opens inwards.
The lock appears to have been designed for the opposite way opening.0 -
I've purchased yale latches before and they don't come handed.
I have one on my door. It's the type with the key on the inside as well.
When I put mine on the latch it can be either up or down. (So not handed)
Sounds like a spring has broke in yours.0 -
Could be - I will strip it down for a look0

This one is not actually a yale - it is a B&Q Era latch !!
and it never went up AND down - just down - which has always concerned me - now the snib is so lose, that whenever the door is closed - the snib drops - which makes entry from the outside IMPOSSIBLE !!
Assuming that I am unable to fix the existing - are they generally straight swaps - mounting point wise and also key barrel wise ?0 -
Contact ERA - they are usually very helpful and send out free replacement parts if there is a known manufacturing defect. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!

There are two widths of lock so be carefull.
eBay is worth a look for a direct replacement.0 -
I don't - got a pic? Even a generic one of the lock you are talking about.
Cheers
The nearest is http://www.ironmongerydirect.co.uk/products/locks_latches_and_security/night_latches/855/traditional_nightlatch
only - ours is polished gold in colour
It is a basic nightlatch with a snib button....0
