Use sky box to get freesat?

Hi I hope someone can help me. I have googled this issue but still can't understand!
I have Sky with a recent box and a dish. I am going to leave Sky. I don't have an ariel so want to use the sky dish for receiving tv.

I understand this is Freesat not Freeview but that's as much as I know! Can I use the Sky box for this or do I need to buy a Freesat box? I would like to keep Sky+ or a record feature. Could some kind person please explain my options simply?

Thank you in advance.

You can use the Sky box to pick up the free channels. There are slightly different channels you get with Freesat from Sky rather Freesat, but they are mainly the same for major free to view channels.

If you want to keep the Sky+ recording feature you have to pay Sky £10 a month.

As above. If you want to retain the Sky+ functions then you'll have to buy a Freesat PVR-straight box swap.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Works out much better value to buy something like a Humax Freesat box then to keep paying Sky £10 each month just to be able to record things. As far as I'm aware Sky don't even let you have the free HD channels in HD either, but you will get them through a Humax Freesat box. This all works with your existing dish.

Wrong you will receive the FTA HD channels (BBC, ITV, Channel 4, NHK World HD and RT HD) and you will also receive the FTV Channel 5HD with your cancelled subscription card which is NOT available on freesat.

There is no point in trying to get Freesat on a Sky digibox. ... all the subscription channels which makes using the digibox a pain for free channels only.
Only if the number of channels you want to view exceeds 50 (the capacity of the Favourite Channels list).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thank you very much to all who replied. I will get a Humax box. Don't want to pay sky another penny if I don't have to.
Will go and research types of Humax boxes.

    Many thanks. Love MSE:T
