Oops - it says be my valentine, but there is probably one that doesn't somewhere!

thanks great idea will search x
  • My daughter had a big disco for her 9th birthday - we did hot dogs for the food, along with cheap crisps and biscuits. Cheap juice cartons are best, much less chance of spillage then (Asda do 24 for £2.00). At a disco, they don't want much in the way of food, snack stuff appears to go down best TBH.
You could use a roll of cheap red wallpaper for the red carpet, would be reasonably sturdy, and disposable.
Have you got a digital camera? If you could get a job lot of cardboard photo frames, and someone in the corner with a laptop and printer, the kids could all get a framed pic of themselves as a leaving gift, would be cheaper and much more useful at that age than party bags. Print off some labels saying thank you for coming, and that's the thank you notes taken care of too.

When I think of a Hollywood theme it conjurs up images of the oscar statue, cocktails, glamerous dress, top hats, sparkle, glitter, red carper the paperazzi

    Some ideas to think about:

colour theme - for drama I would go for balck and gold

papperazzi entrance - get some friends with cameras to pose as paperazzi photographers and take lots of photos of the guests as they arrive - shouting their names and getting them to pose for photos on a red carpet

diy photo booth - we did this for my dd 11th birthday - the idea is they put funny props on and you take pics of them standing behind a booth or empty picture frame- i went one step furter and printed them images off and handed them out to the guests as part of the party bag - i removed the glass from an old picture frame - as large one big enough for 2 or 3 people to hold up infront of themselves - painted it white and then got lots of fancy dress props, wigs, glasses, musical instruments, the props work best if they are all for above the shoulders. see here for an idea

Kiddie cocktails - buy some cheap plastic cocktail glasses, straws and paper umberellas, good old squash would be fine the kids wont give a hoot whats in the glass, the more decoration inside the glass the better. I bought 20 or so from poundland a few years ago.

Cookies shaped like the oscar statue - bake them youself and give them as party favours with a personalsied tag attached to each one with the guest name and a thank you note - something like this

Decorations - you could buy paper lanterns (not the ones you light and float off) the ones which look like paper light shades - these can make a very dramtic display and can be bought in bulk from ebay, either new or secondhand.
Balloons as someone else suggested - you can get them in gold shaped like stars
Handmade gold stars made from cardboard, decorated in glitter and hung on fishing wire from the ceiling
Or what about making some black and white movie clapper boards out of cardboard or peinting off the internet and sticking them to the walls or hand from ceiling for decoration.

popcorn - no oscar movie would be complete without popcorn, you can either pop it yourself, buy it bagged and ready made (pound shop again) and then decant it into some red and white stripey popcorn bags (ebay)

You could look in Iceland for cheap party nibbles, you'll need to preheat them I guess but you could still serve them cold at the venue. I wouldn't cater for a full meal for that many children, just lay out some bits they can pick at - thinking about it, you could serve them on trays as canapes, like at a Hollywood party

Party bags don't matter but maybe some sweets as they leave.

Can you get a red carpet from anywhere, it would be fun for them to walk up into the venue, and someone there (your husband?) as a paparazzi photographer to take shots as they arrive, if anyone has a polaroid camera you could take shots and place them on a wall of fame for them to take home later?

Don't give them nibbles they (the boys in particular) will think it's great fun to throw stuff at each other.....stick to pizza, hotdogs, cheap crisps and cheap bottles of fizzy.....no jelly etc.

The more choice they have the more mess they will make.........

Hollywood... Movie premiere? Popcorn, candy floss, is there a tiny local cinema or film club room you could rent cheaply, and actually watch a new release?
  • Polaroids aren't a cheap option- you'd be better with photo paper, laptop and a printer. Wouldn't be much equipment to set up and would be more MSE

Not if you don't have a printer but do have film x
