My dog is 16 and I love her so much BUT............right this very minute am in tears writing this! She has wet my carpet 3 times the past week and I have cleaned cleaned CLEANED but the smell keeps coming back. It smells like a 100 cats have wet my carpet. Its so upsetting as minute I open door the stench hits me in the face. My lovely mum last night helped me scrub the carpet and we scrubbed like mad for two hours and its smelled lovely..........but smell is back today. I have used various things including vinegar as had read somewhere that would help but nothing has so far. Please someone help!

Have you tried treating the dry stains? Bicarbonate of soda is a heck of a good odour neutraliser.
tbh I had a similar prob with my elderly springer. What I used to do was to soak up as much wee as possible with old towels (kept for that purpose) then dry the patch. then smother it in bicarbonate of soda - buy as large a pack as you can. its no good sprinkling it on - it needs to look as if you had a snowfall! thickly cover the carpet! then leave overnight or at least 12 hours and vacuum off. you may need to repeat this if the smell is really strong.
another emergency measure is to again soak up as much as possible then flood the area with your best vodka! the alcohol helps neutralise and evaporates quickly - so the patch dries faster and if necessary you can then use the bicarb - but really really good vodka does the trick!
Vinegar is great at most things but not pet wee! another little trick I learned is that Biological washing powder is best for sorting out the pet bedding when they are a bit incontinent - I don't find it good for carpets as you have to really wet the carpet! my wool carpets didn't like it!
it is upsetting and I am soooo sorry this is happening to you. What does the vet say? I know you love her and want to keep her alive as long as poss, but, is this perhaps a sign she is ready to go? I hope you don't get offended hun, but its not pleasant for the dog if she is aware she has 'soiled' in the house.0 -

steam clean several times and use rosemary and lavender oil which are great odour killers with dog smells.
I no longer have carpets having had dogs for years and an ex deciding it was clever to give Barney Boy a whole packet of liver sticks in one day............went right through him pour thing and killed the carpets beyond rescue.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0 -

OMG! a WHOLE packet? my sbt loved liver - raw, fried, dried and with or without onions - it was her favourite! but, like with your dog she could only have small amounts without it going through her 'like a dose of salts'!
her other favourite food was Cucumber! weird dog!0 -

I have actually been told NOT to steam clean under any circumstances??????????? Saying something about the steam will seal in the enzymes of the urine?? I have no idea but that was enough to freak me out and not to plug in my steam cleaner! But thank you so much for trying to help me - much appreciated x0 -

I have sprayed some Smirnoff down - I will try anything. Thank you so much also for taking the time to help me.
I think I know its maybe perhaps getting very close to THAT time but cant bear it. I got my dog when I was 28......and am 44 now.
My dad died last year and my dog was the one that got me through it - I would walk her constantly and it slowly helped clear my head - she also got me through my marriage break up.. She has helped me through so much and I now have to help her through her hard times.
Its truly breaking my heart0 -
It does say not suitable for use on wool. What are your carpets made from? If they aren't wool it's likely they are polyester and therefore very cheap to replace rather than bothering with all these chemicals I'd just replace. You can get room size pieces for less than £50...
Am reluctant to change my carpets at the moment as feel her 'accidents' will happen again. I am not sure what my carpet is made of..........am sure its not wool but they were only put down in January and the living room carpet cost me £8000
