Ebay purchase advice please

I've had a read through the bangernomics thread, and got some really useful info off there .

We're looking for a cheap motor for OH to use for work.
Not bothered about it being particularly aesthetically pleasing as it will have tools, ladders and a dirty OH in it.

I've seen a few listings like this on ebay, and wondered if anyone had any experience or advice to offer please.

I'm forever thinking "if it seems to good to be true...."! so as we have a budget of only £500 to include insurance, I was hoping that something like this would be suitable, as it has a full MOT. It'll probably end up going for way more than this, but if the seller is ok then I might keep my eye on their other sales for a bargain.

  • Can't see you getting that and insurance for less than £500. It's got seven seats, even with the damage it will attract bids from families on a tight budget.
  • So it is too good to be true then lol.

I think I will stick to genuine private sellers then.

    Thanks
  • It's not that it's too good to be true, it's that it is listed as an auction and not a classified price. There's still a week to run on it so put it in your watch list and keep searching. Have a look at old volvo estates or something that was unpopular like a Scorpio if you don't care about looks.
  • I'm not sure I like the seller's terms & conditions.

They classify everything as 'for spares or repair' and 'mileage incorrect', so that they can get around the SOGA. I'm not sure where they stand legally with this. I'm sure somebody will be along shortly with an opinion.

But it's the old eBay trick of selling something as 'untested' when it probably is...
  • Presumably, this is the same kind of thing then...

Thanks for the advice, sometimes I just need someone to point out the glaringly obvious!

How did that pass an MOT with the airbag and ABS light on?

Your never going to buy a car and insure it for a budget of £500.

You could pick up a reliable car for £500. If your lucky it may have a little bit of tax on it.

From the two links you put up. the first was at £102, but this is not the for sale price, its just how much the bid is at the moment.

The other was withdrawn, probably sold elsewhere. Try selecting, classifieds or buy now when you do your search on Ebay.

Also I would do an insurance quote on a range of cars. I,m presuming he will be needing a reasonable sized car to carry ladders and business insurance. You may be in for a shock on the cost.

Never say never Gaz, it is possible to buy a insure a car for £500.

My brother used to pay only £98 a year for insurance on his Escort Mk3 and my three year old Astra just cost me £237 to insure. I'm sure I could find something cheap on Gumtree and get insurance all in for £500.

    Just found this
    http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/audi-a4-estate-auto-mot-10months-tax-2months-fsh/1032373328

Reckon I could get them down to £325-£350.
  • there's a 'cars under £500' page on Facebook as well.

Although I agree with the others in that it'll be difficult to get it all for under £500 - depending on his NCD. A lot of the cheaper cars will have very short tax and MOT - if any at all, or needs something fixing. There's a Passat estate for sale near me for £200 with a misfire and a few months tax and ticket.
Also, do you know any mechanics as they may hear of some. My mechanic has just picked up a Y reg Pug 206 GTi for £80, needed new tyres though.

    Its possible, but unlikely.

The OP's other half will need business insurance, although not always significantly more expensive, its usually more.

Plus has her other half got his own full NCD to attach to the policy?.

If not its going to be £££££.

To be honest the fact the OP thought a
2004 TOYOTA COROLLA VERSO D4D T-SPIRIT DVD 7 SEATS DIESEL.

Was for sale for £102, says that they have not sat down and investigated the budget seriously.

As I said in my previous post, if they only have a budget of £500, I would advise checking insurance first to see what, if any cars are possible.
