They'll always same something like "It's very busy around March, April, May because so many people apply to open ISAs around the same time [end/start of tax year]" Very true, of course. But if they know this and can foresee it then they (the larger organisations) can shift staff in readiness for the busy time. And it gets worse - as every year there can potentially be as many new ISAs added as there are adults. After 10 years it could (in theory) reach 300 million separate accounts. Now if people start getting itchy and transfer those accounts more and more often the delays could reach six months, never mind two!

perhaps more and more providers will stop allowing transfers in on their top paying isa accounts

Was considering transferring my Portman ISA to another provider penalty free after the merger with Nationwide. Having second thoughts now. I'll probably transfer it to another Nationwide ISA, that way, at least I will get my interest backdated if there's a delay.
  • I attempted to transfer 2 ISAs to Nationwide in May 2008. Amazingly the first transfer occurred by July. Since then, nothing, despite repeated queries, phone calls etc. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to their actions and I'm not happy committing any money to such a band of disorganized idiots.

I'll be escaping as soon as feasible

4: number of transfers, applied for end May, beginning of June.
4: number of letters from old providers received to confirm payment of balances.
1: NW ISAs actually open at time of writing. (Finally notified by letter on 4th August)
It does appear that they have dated the ISA 10th June though, which is something...

Going back into branch tomorrow to ask how to complain...
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

I have been having problems with Nationwide ISA as well. I turned my ISA into a one year fixed rate bond in April 2009. Early in March 2010 I got a letter informing me the bond was maturing on 9 April and gave me options what to do with the money. I elected to re-invest most in another one year fixed rate bond and asked for rest as a cheque. I got a letter back saying my request was received on 7 April. Early May I get a cheque but also a letter saying I had missed 9 April deadline to say what I wanted to do with my ISA when it matured! Now mid June and I have yet to receive a certificate concerning my new fixed rate. Have rung 3 times...first person said Certificate had been sent week before. When it didn't arrive I called and was told it would be issued very soon and to wait a week. Still didn't arrive. Third time I rang was told it was not yet ready and was at something called 'Phase 2'...and I was then given a lot of incomprehensible terminology explaining what was going on. I was with Portman before Nationwide took it over. Service has really deteriorated (and attitude of staff in my local branch stinks too..smug and dismissive, and I am not the only customer who feels this...one work colleague has transferred out all her accounts from Nationwide)...really unhappy with level of service...

Oh just dont get me started!!!! Eventually got a certificate for my FRISA 4 yr transferred from Cheshire B S to Nationwide having waited over 2 months! But they have opened the account as an annual interest when I ticked the app form for monthly, and of course completed my bank details. Went into branch Monday as just come back off holiday to sort it out and the branch were very helpful but the system showed incorrect bank account number!!! So not only was the interest incorrect but also the bank details!!! And I wouldnt have known had I not seen that on the screen. The Nationwide employee was so helpfull to be fair and she spent about 15 mins trying to get through to the ISA dept she said it was a joke and told them that "the customer has had enough" as we tried to sort out a transfer from Santander also, still no certificate, app completed 7th April!!!!!!!!!! 11 weeks now!!!!!!!!!! Some pathetic excuse about change of address of Santander and them not updating the system!!!! And still I wait, I know they now have the cheque.......... Not a happy bunny at all.
