I'm not really into work drinks as I use to be but decided to step out comfort zone to go tonight, being quiet didn't have much to say but listened to stories though felt empty after the experience....wondered if anyone else gets that but maybe I felt that cause don't really make the effort. If anything it's put me off wanting to brave it again but be nice to try to get to know folk. Just didn't like emptiness I felt!

I don't. There is always something on at work drinks wise, I've never been out with my colleagues yet. It's not something I've ever really done though, I have a reasonably healthy social life with like minded friends anyway.0

I do for christmas and weddings but there is a lot of socials, which just seem to be about going and just getting hammered. Cant be bothered with that these days, so dont go.0

There are regular social events arranged through my work. Sometimes its just drinks, other times we go out for meals together. There is always a huge Xmas party and an end of school year summer barbeque. I am off on a bike ride with a group of 20 of them on Saturday weather permitting. Another set of colleagues have roped me in to doing a sponsored walk. No-one goes barmy and gets hammered and on the whole I have always enjoyed going along, mixing with people and getting to know them all better in a relaxed environment. The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.0

I got to meals with my immediate team (about 10 people) but I don't go to drinks things, and I don't go to the meals with the larger team (about 60?). With fewer people it's easier to join in conversations I think, and if you are at a meal rather than just standing around hold drinks it gives you something to talk about if the conversation dries up!
I think a lot of the reason I don't like going for drinks things is that I have problems hearing the conversations when there is a lot of background noise and music like there often is in bars, so if this isn't a problem you'd probably enjoy it more.0 -
Yes, I try to wherever possible. I work for a large firm and am at the start of my career, apart from the chance to catch up with my friends in other departments, it's also a chance to practice networking in an informal context (ie. with colleagues not clients) and a chance to meet new people from other departments and get my face and name about a bit. Plus, you get all the gossip or inside info from people at these events so it can be very useful.0

I'd not go - there's always some loud, drunk, idiot that'll be hell bent on spoiling the night, then calling YOU boring because you've not sunk 5 pints and nearly got in a fight.0

Only at Christmas and then only because I feel obliged. I get on with my colleagues well enough as a rule, but we don't have a lot in common outside of work. Plus they never agree to the things I want to do - now if they planned to go to a quiz night I'd be much more amenable. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I get out of it as often as I can. My small team has a meal out together a few times a year which is nice, but there's a 60-strong drinks evening every month and I've never been. I hate the run-up to Christmas with the endless run of parties so I just hibernate until it's all over. The only time I go is if it's politically a good idea ie. celebration of promotion day, when it's expected of everyone to turn up."Save £12k in 2019" #120 - £100,699.57/£100,0000

I did go, was an alcoholic and good excuse to drink. When sorted out went for meal, no drinks, usual excuse was can't drink having the grandchildren tomorrow. I enjoy keeping up with ex colleagues now retired so we do lunch, we all drive so quite happy not to think about drink.0

Only my immediate colleagues and yes I jump at the chance as I number them among my good friends. There are no social events that take place among the wider staff.0
