I have bought from there before but to be honest the quality is generally !!!! and to be honest the phrase 'buy cheap buy twice' springs to mind. I've had the odd good bit, but a lot of it really is naff and the mentality of people who shop there is unbeleivable. Don't get me wrong, I am very skint myself, but so disheartened with buying stuff and it falling apart/going out of shape/fading. And if they can sell it so cheap, what are they paying the people who make it? Makes me feel quite funny so I try to buy elsewhere.
I understand your sentiment fully, but what people forget to ask themselves is how much is the child in the "sweat-shop" being paid relative to prices in his country, and what alternative do they have when it comes to earning a living?
I remember an undercover documentary from a while back about an aid worker, he was either Dutch or Scandinavian. He was at the forefront of campaigning for childrens' rights, and travelled around third world countries getting these "immoral sweat-shops" closed down with the help of publicity and celebrity endorsements for his work. What the undercover documentary uncovered was that he was a paedophile. Having cost these children their only means of earning an honest days wage, their "saviour" would return later in the year when the news agenda had shifted elsewhere with a group of "social workers", most of whom were fully paid up guests on a "sex tour" looking to exploit children who they had an inkling would be getting just about desperate enough to do anything for even less than they were getting in the "sweat-shop".
Don't feel bad about cheap clothes. You're providing these people with a means of earning an honest living, that won't give them aids or any other number of sexually transmitted diseases. Remember this if you're wondering whether or not you are exploiting them:
At the Metropole Hotel in Karachi a cup of tea and a biscuit cost one Rupee. Most people there would consider that an extravagance as on any street corner you can get a full meal with a cup of tea and biscuit for about a quarter of that. The exchange rate at the moment is around 125 Pakistani rupees to the pound. I recently returned from a trip to Saudi Arabia. A chicken sandwich at their equivalent of McDonalds costs 2 Saudi Riyals. The exchange rate at the moment is 7 and a half Riyals to the pound.
Now ask yourself if you would rather they were being exploited as cheap labour (relative to our costs of living) in factories, or being used as sex toys by perverts who know their behaviour would be legally and socially unacceptable back home?0 -
