I always tax mine as soon as the reminder arrives (or I would forget
).
As soon as the disc arrives, I fit it (or I would lose it, and forget
)
I was told (by a clever friend) that the new disc is not valid until the start of the month, but it doesn't have a "from" date on it, only an expiry date.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

We had the same problem this year, tax ran out 31st August, we were away from 15th August to 2nd September.
We couldn't tax it before hand as the insurance ran out 26 August despite having arranged insurance with another company so in effect the insurance didn't run out. However, due to the insurance database not showing this we couldn't tax the car in advance, I suppose the new insurers only update the database from the date they take over?
Couldn't do it whilst away as there was no internet connection where we were and it was fairly rural so no cyber cafe in the area either.
Taxed it when we got back a few days late without any issue, the car was on the drive and we paid from 1st Oct in any case so it's not like we were trying to cheat the system.
We have the same problem every February as well as the MOT runs out just before the end of Feb and cannot usually afford a full 12 months tax from the robbers.

Looks like I stand corrected on the taxing after SORN thing.scaredofdebt wrote: »We couldn't tax it before hand as the insurance ran out 26 August despite having arranged insurance with another company so in effect the insurance didn't run out. Always try to have your tax expire away from the MOT and insurance expiry dates.
Since your MOT and insurance are 6 months apart, you could always SORN (and cash in the remaining tax) after 3 months, and then re-tax the car the next day.0 -

Yes, at least in my experience. The current system is a right PITA when your tax and insurance renewals coincide like that. I resorted to buying a six month tax disc to break the cycle.0 -

Don't tax discs only come in either 6 month of 12 month varieties? I think the "from" date can probably be deduced from the expiry date

What I meant is
I have a disc that has an expiry date 13 months away, so I display it, and I don't need to display the old (still valid) one as well.
The new one does not have a starting date, so it must be valid from receipt, rather than the first of the next month..I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Are you sure about that? I've always been under the impression that a 12 month tax disc is valid for 12 months, not 12 months plus a bit. But I might be wrong.0 -
I'm not sure at all

The car shows as taxed so I won't get stopped to check it, it would have to be spotted out on the road.
I still have 9 days to find out though

Unless your car is a brand new one on its first ever tax disc then you can be done for not displaying a valid disc unless you display the old one beside it.Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0
