Road tax, applying 1 week Later than renewal date?

If your car road tax disc expires on 1st Oct,

the DVLA reminder says you need to renew it between 20 Sep - 1st Oct 2013.

but you are away for 3 weeks currently , on holiday.

You get back on the 8th of October and you purchase the road tax disc for 8th Oct onwards,
(you haven't driven the car between the 3 weeks, it has just been parked undriven in the driveway).

so is it fine to get the road tax 8 days later than the day of the reminder?

Yes should be fine. Technically it isn't and I would keep it off the road just in case.

Why not take the relevant information with you and do it online whilst you are away?

You don't save by doing it later, do you?
  • You can apply in advance:
    https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-tax-disc-in-advance
but this may not fit in with planned finances.

    This^

Why not do it on line now?

You'll be taxing it back to 1st October onwards, so I dont see the problem.

There will be a gap in the tax of 8 days, and there's automatic fines for letting tax expire now?

The car is on a driveway, so you can declare SORN on the evening before your holiday and then tax it upon your return.

You will not be able to drive your car until the disc arrives which can take a few days, plan for up to 5 days.

Probably easier to either tax in advance or tax it online. Surely you can find an internet cafe or something while you're away.

Note - if you are in Northern Ireland you can't tax online. (You can by Phone - but it can be almost impossible to ger through sometimes)

You can drive it as soon as the tax is paid. You don't need to wait for the disc to arrive.

Nope, it is an offence to use a car on the public road without displaying a valid tax disc.

The 5 day grace period only applies to people who tax online before their old disk expires.
